The Koblenz Stadtmitte stop is a stop that was put into operation on April 14, 2011 on the left stretch of the Rhine in Koblenz .

The main goal was to create direct access to the railroad in downtown Koblenz. The breakpoint played an essential role in the traffic concept for the 2011 Federal Garden Show in Koblenz.

location

Koblenz Stadtmitte is a stop on the left Rhine route , just 800 meters north of Koblenz main train station and only 1.2 kilometers south of Koblenz-Lützel train station , both of which are also connected to the left Rhine route.

The Koblenz Stadtmitte stop is located in the Altstadt district on the border with the Rauental and Mitte districts, directly west of the Löhr-Center shopping center and not far from the pedestrian zone. On the opposite side of the shopping center is the bus station Stadtmitte / Löhr Center , which is a hub in Koblenz's local transport . In contrast to the bus station at the main train station, all main inner-city traffic lines run there.

In the second half of the 19th century, there was already a train station near the stop in what is now Fischelstrasse. It was called " Rheinischer Bahnhof " and was located on the left-hand Rhine route that led from Cologne to Bingerbrück . In the first years of the 20th century, however, it was abandoned in favor of today's main station in order to link the Moselle route with the Rhine route.

history

Opening of the breakpoint - v. l. To right: Susanne Kosinsky ( DB ), Udo Wagner (DB), Lord Mayor Joachim Hofmann-Göttig and Lothar Kaufmann ( MWKEL ).

As early as the 1930s there were suggestions for a train stop near the city center. However, these were not pursued further. This topic emerged again at the end of the 1970s and was pursued in planning. In 1983 the idea of a train stop in the city center was included in the land use plan. At that time, there were considerations to create a complete S-Bahn ring around Koblenz. In the following years, the plan was followed up. After some controversy in the Koblenz city council , with a change in majorities in 1999, implementation was delayed again and again. It was not until 2005 that the decision was made to set up the breakpoint. The organization of the Federal Garden Show 2011 in Koblenz was a decisive reason for the decision to finally implement the plans. The first work began in January 2008.

Before construction of the actual stopping point could begin, the westernmost of the three tracks first had to be moved about five meters to the west over a length of about 300 meters to make room for the construction of a central platform. Then the construction of the central platform for tracks 2 and 3 and the construction of the outer platform for track 1 began. During this time it was still discussed whether the stop should be connected directly to the Löhr-Center shopping center. In order not to reduce the purchasing power on Löhrstrasse too much, no direct access to the Löhr-Center was created from the stop.

On April 14, 2011, one day before the start of the Federal Garden Show in Koblenz, the stopping point was put into operation.

In 2005 the breakpoint was estimated at 9.1 million euros. A later cost estimate from 2008, however, showed a total of 11.7 million euros for the construction. According to this calculation, the budget was increased in summer 2008 and had to be increased again in summer 2009. The reasons for this were allegedly an unsustainable and contaminated subsurface as well as obstacles such as foundations and cables from a previous development. In addition, at this point in time the construction site was delayed by four and a half months as a result of an appeal . Thus, in order for the stopping point to go into operation in time for the scheduled date, the timetable change in December 2010, acceleration measures had to be initiated and financed. The additional costs amounted to around 1.5 million euros. After controversial discussions, the city council made available a budget of 13.1 million euros in June 2010. In December of the same year it emerged that a further 5.4 million euros would be required. The drainage of the soil was more complex and expensive, and securing the construction site was more expensive than planned. In addition, acceleration measures had to be financed once again so that the train stop could go into operation in time for the Federal Garden Show. An opening in December 2010 was no longer possible at this point. Since the costs of the construction project increased, the fee claims of the planners also increased. The funds to cover the additional costs were also made available in January of the following year. The total construction costs thus amounted to around 18.5 million euros and were thus twice as high as originally estimated.

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate subsidized the building project with 9.1 million euros. The Auditing Office of the City of Koblenz is currently investigating the extent to which planning and tendering errors led to the increase in costs and whether accounting errors were made.

In June 2011, during the Koblenz Federal Garden Show, a first passenger survey was carried out at the Stadtmitte stop. On the working days of the month, an average of 2,700 people use the stop, with Friday being the day with the highest demand with an average of 3,000 passengers. 1500 passengers used it on Sunday. A second passenger count was carried out in November of the same year. At that time, an average of 2000 people used the breakpoint from Monday to Friday. The lower number of passengers was justified with the end of the Federal Horticultural Show and the low demand month of November.

In the passenger count in 2014, around 4,750 passengers use the stop on weekdays, and almost 3,200 on weekends. Since the timetable change in December 2014, the trains on the newly designed regional train line RB 23 from Mayen to Limburg an der Lahn stop in Koblenz city center.

With the timetable change in December 2016, the two regional train lines that ran on the left bank of the Rhine between Koblenz and Mainz or Koblenz and Cologne were merged. This means that Koblenz city center can be reached much faster when coming from Mainz.

Platforms

Map of the railway facilities in the greater Koblenz area

The Koblenz Stadtmitte stop has three platform tracks, consisting of an outside platform on track 1 and a central platform on tracks 2 and 3. The platforms are designed for stopping trains with a length of 180 meters. The central platform is barrier-free via an elevator, the outer platform can be reached via a ramp. The platform edges are 76 centimeters high, but the stopping point is approached by trains with a boarding height of 55 centimeters and 76 centimeters.

Local transport

Five local transport lines stop at the station. The trains of the RE 5, which runs between Koblenz Hauptbahnhof and Wesel , the RB 26, which commutes between Mainz Hauptbahnhof and Cologne Messe / Deutz and the trains of the RB 23, which runs between Mayen and Limburg is wrong. At platform 3, the RB 10 runs in both directions between Neuwied and Frankfurt am Main . In its redesign, which was implemented when the 2010/2011 timetable was changed on December 12, 2010, this line was extended to Neuwied in order to better connect the Stadtmitte stop. The RB 27 also stops at track 3 in both directions and runs on the right bank of the Rhine (via Neuwied) between Koblenz main station and Rommerskirchen. In the HVZ, the trains on this line continue to Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof.
