Location of the municipality of Heiden in the Borken district | ||
Heiden ( Low German Häiden ) is a municipality in Westmünsterland in northwestern North Rhine-Westphalia and belongs to the district of Borken in the administrative district of Münster .
The most important symbols of the community are the devil stones .
geography
Geographical location
Heiden lies in the west of the Westphalian Bay and in the north of the Hohe Mark-Westmünsterland Nature Park . It is located south of the mountain range Die Berge . With a forest share of 23.1%, Heiden is the most wooded municipality in the Borken district. The majority of these forest areas extend on the so-called Uhlenberg , in which the devil's stones are also located. The Heiden area is crossed by several tributaries of the Borkener Aa , which belong to the IJssel river system . Only the Wellbruchbach in the south can be assigned to the Lippe system .
Community structure
The community area is not further subdivided. However, besides the main town there are several smaller settlements and three farmers . The actual main town of Heiden is largely framed by the bypass road . The industrial area and a sports and leisure center are located in the southeast of the village. The remaining agriculture within the bypass road is increasingly being displaced, inner-city open spaces are being condensed.
Nordick
The north-eastern part of the municipality is known as the Nordick farming community, in the center of the hamlet of Nordick on the main road between Heiden and Velen. The riding and breeding club, the Römersee and an artesian well can be found in Nordick .
Lively
The farmers Leblich, with the hamlets Leblich and Buschhausen and the street village of Heiden on Bahnhofstrasse, extend southeast of the main town . The south of the farmers is only sparsely populated, the Reker Feld forest area extends here .
Lammersfeld
The Lammersfeld peasantry , which can usually be found on maps under the name of the village peasantry , lies between Heiden and Borken. Unlike in Nordick and Leblich, there is no central hamlet here , i. H. Lammersfeld is a pure scattered settlement . The Lammersfeld is characterized by gentle hills and the Grunewald , which lies on its western edge.

history
prehistory
The first traces of human settlement in the Heiden area can be found in the Teufelsteinen , a stone grave from the funnel beaker culture of the Neolithic Age (approx. 3500–2800 BC).
Origin / name
Today's Heiden probably arose from the Heghinc farm at the crossroads. The heath village was first mentioned in a document around 870 when it was donated to the Werden monastery .
The first name of the place was Heidion , later it was called Heithene , Hethen and finally Heyden . The name can be traced back to the historical heathland in the region, which was created after the first deforestation by humans. Today the region is again densely forested or intensively cultivated and only a few moors are left of the heather .
History until 1945
The Heiden parish was founded in 1195, and in 1209 the parish of Heiden was first mentioned in a document.
In 1404, Duke Rainald IV of Geldern plundered the village and burned the church down.
Until the beginning of the 17th century, Heiden belonged as a parish to the diocese of Münster , which was a direct member of the Federation of the Holy Roman Empire . In 1803 Heiden came to the Principality of Salm as part of the Napoleonic Wars , which became French territory in 1811 . Until 1815, Heiden was part of the Lippe department , which included part of northern Germany occupied by France. With the occupation, the French (secular) administrative system was introduced in Heiden as well. In 1812 a mayor (French: Marie) was appointed for the first time: Ferdinand Steinmann was mayor of Heiden until 1835 even after the end of the Napoleonic era. The municipal council initially consisted of 8 citizens.
After a short transition phase, Heiden finally became part of the new Prussian province of Westphalia . There it was until 1934 the only municipality of the Heiden office .
In 1888 the church was demolished again. It was rebuilt as a neo-Gothic church on today's old church square until 1891 and has since formed the new center of the village.
In 1934 the Heiden office was dissolved, so that the municipality was a district direct for four years. In 1938 the Heiden-Reken Office was founded, which in addition to Heiden included the predecessor communities of today's Reken . Heiden was the official seat.
History since 1945
In the 1950s, the settlement area experienced a first expansion. The primary school , a hospital and the Protestant church were built. In 1973 the church, which was partially damaged in the war and rebuilt, was demolished after it had been replaced by a modern building on the newly created Rathausplatz in 1972.
With the regional reform in 1975, the Heiden-Reken office was dissolved. A sub-area that belonged to the municipality of Marbeck until 1969 was incorporated into the district town of Borken with around 240 inhabitants at that time. On the same day, another piece of land with then around 150 inhabitants was given to the neighboring municipality of Velen. Heiden and Reken were administered together for over two years, despite the dissolution of office. In 1976 the hospital was converted into a nursing home. Heiden's settlement area continues to develop in the direction of the bypass roads to this day. Despite the increasing number of inhabitants, the incorporation to Borken has been discussed again and again in recent decades.

There are two Catholic kindergartens (St. Georg and St. Josef) in the northern half of the village. In addition, the community is responsible for the St. Josef retirement home.
St. Paul
The significantly smaller Protestant community operates its church and its community center in a building complex in the north of the village. A St. Paulus kindergarten exists in the south of the village.

Benson received 52.5% in his third candidacy for the SPD in a row; In the first ballot he defeated Mayor Heiner Buß, who had been ruling for three terms in office (non-party), who achieved 47.5%.
Coat of arms, banner and flag
The municipality was granted the right to use a coat of arms, a seal and a flag in a document from the Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf on April 17, 1956.
coat of arms
Blazon : "In the blue field two silver (white) bars, the bottom of which is a golden (yellow) megalithic grave." Heiden and Werste are the only communities in North Rhine-Westphalia with such a coat of arms.
The coat of arms of the Lords of Heiden - three blue bars in silver - was used as the basis for the municipal coat of arms . In place of the third bar, the Neolithic large stone grave of the devil stones reminds of the settlement and importance of the place in prehistoric times.
Banner and flag
Description of the banner: "Blue-white-blue in a ratio of 1: 3: 1 striped lengthways with the coat of arms above the center."
Description of the flag: “In the square blue flag cloth, two white bars, the bottom of which is a yellow barrow; at the flying end three white bibs sloping downwards. ”The main statute does not give a description of the flag.
Town twinning
There is a city friendship with the Thuringian Heilbad Heiligenstadt , a city partnership with Lancaster in the USA and since April 2018 a partnership with the municipality of Rybno in Poland .
Heilbad Heiligenstadt
Even before the reunification of the two German states, first written contacts were made with the city of Heiligenstadt at the request of the CDU Women's Union (citizens' application of December 12, 1989). The reason for making contact was found in the fact that the Sisters of St. Maria Magdalena Postel , the Heiligenstadt school sisters , have performed their service in the former hospital and today's retirement home in Heiden for many years. Then a dialogue developed with the official representatives of the city of Heiligenstadt, the sisters in the mountain monastery of the Heiligenstadt school sisters and the people and groups in the city. At the same time, intensive consultations for administrative tasks were held by the community's staff, relief campaigns by Werbekreis Heiden, an exchange of young people and many activities by the clubs. On March 9, 1991, the municipality of Heiden concluded a friendship agreement with the city of Heiligenstadt, thereby documenting close cooperation between the council and administration of both municipalities.
Lancaster / Wisconsin (USA)
The idea of a city partnership with Lancaster in Wisconsin (USA) has its roots in music. Many generations ago, members of the Busch family immigrated from Heiden to Wisconsin. In search of their roots, the Busch family came to Heiden in the late 1980s. A common evening with members of the band took place in the Heimathaus, especially since the Busch family also makes music. They form an important part of the local music band in Lancaster. The Heiden music band wanted to visit Lancaster very quickly. This then took place in 1995. Since then there has been a lively exchange between the musicians. But also the first stays of schoolchildren and students in America followed. During a visit by members of the band in Lancaster in 2007, the "City of Lancaster" in the person of Mayor Jerome H. Wehrle expressed the wish to establish an official partnership with Heiden.
The town twinning is intended to ensure that, on the basis of friendly cooperation, equality and mutual benefit, the city of Lancaster and the municipality of Heiden commit to promoting and expanding cultural, economic and trade relations between the two cities. In addition, there are plans to initiate wide-ranging exchanges in areas such as: to promote their prosperity and further deepen friendship between the people of the two countries. B. To practice education, science, technology, sports and health. On May 11, 2010, the council decided on the official partnership in the document 051/2010.
Rybno (Poland)
A town partnership with the municipality of Rybno (Poland) has existed since April 20, 2018.
Culture and sights
Buildings
The parish church of St. Georg , which was built in 1972 on the Rathausplatz in a modern style, has a capacity of 600 people.
The Rathausplatz , which has existed in its current form since the 1970s, is a market square with a town hall complex and a church. Before that there was still arable land here. The current location of the House of Health was the location of the church until the 1960s. The central intersection is Maiboekenplatz
The communal multi-purpose hall has a coverable stage, a partition wall, soccer goals and basketball hoops, a scoreboard and a changing room complex. It is used by music and sports clubs as well as schools and churches.
The Heimathaus is the museum of the Heimatverein, and the St. Josef Altenzentrum was a hospital until 1976.
Green spaces and recreation
Inner- local park areas are the bird park with a small selection of native birds in the immediate vicinity of the Altenzentrum and the biotope . A lake and park landscape is located in the sports and leisure center.

Open air and wave pool
The communal swimming pool has three outdoor pools, one as a wave pool. The area also offers several playground elements, jumping cushions and a large lawn. In the winter of 2016/17, renovation work was carried out on the site. Mayor Benson ruled out a privatization of the swimming pool. Even his predecessor Buß wanted to keep the swimming pool as a communal facility. Because of the special features of the wave pool and the comparatively large sunbathing area, the HeidenSpaßBad is also a national excursion destination on warm summer days.
Club sport
The largest sports club is FC Viktoria Heiden 1921 e. V., which offers badminton and athletics in addition to soccer. The Heiden sports center has two natural and one artificial turf pitches. The largest square is called the “Volksbank Stadium”. The first team in the soccer department has played in the Landesliga Westfalen without interruption since the 2004/2005 season . In the 2013/2014 season, the team was promoted to the Westfalenliga 1 , which corresponds to the sixth league at national level. Römersee
In the north of the area on the border with Velen lies the almost 0.7 ha large Römersee, around which a nature reserve used to be. Today the Römersee is the location of a campsite.

The Black Fens nature reserve connects to the White Fens area of Velen . There is also an artesian well with a treading basin.
Economy and Infrastructure
Heiden has an industrial area in the south-east of the town with alignment to the nearby A 31 .
Together with Reken and Borken , Heiden wanted to participate in the A 31 industrial park , the realization of which has since been abandoned for nature conservation reasons.
primary care
Originally there was an Aldi and a Plus branch on Rathausplatz . In 2010 Aldi gave up the Heiden location, the Plus store moved into its sales area and was converted into a Netto branch.
In the industrial area there are also supermarkets of the Lidl chain and the regional K + K chain.
A full-range Edeka brand was originally located on Rathausplatz . At the moment there are efforts in politics to relocate this type of shop in the village center.

The Borken educational center is primarily used for further education. Secondary schools in the neighboring towns of Reken and Velen are also visited in large numbers.
The Catholic Church runs a small public library on Rathausplatz.
Together with Velen, Reken, Gescher, Raesfeld and Borken, Heiden participates in the adult education center Borken, and together with Raesfeld and Borken in the music school Borken.
Marienschule
The Marienschule (after St. Mary ) is located in the south of the village opposite the cemetery. It is operated in three or four trains as required. About 350 students are taught here. The U-shaped school building consists of an old building in which the administrative apparatus and the first classes are housed. In the connecting wing there are music rooms and an all-day school, which is managed independently from the school. The three-story new building adjoins it. Classes 2-4 are housed here. The Marienschule runs its own swimming pool and gym, which are also used by other clubs. The school yard was redesigned in 2011 and 2012 and the school grounds were fenced off. The Schützenfestwiese and the sports and leisure center are right next to the school.
The previous building of the Marienschule is closer to the village center and is now the location of a fitness studio.
Ludgerus School
The Ludgerus secondary school was in the north of the village. Due to the constantly falling number of students, it merged with a secondary school from the neighboring town of Ramsdorf. The Heiden location was finally given up from summer 2018. The subsequent use of the school building includes, among other things, the local youth club and a kindergarten. The building complex today bears the title "House of Encounter".
