The Herzogenweiher is a body of water in the Baden-Württemberg municipality of Amtzell in the Ravensburg district in Germany. It was first mentioned in 1396 and served as a reservoir for various mills.

location and size

The lake is located around 2.2 kilometers southwest of the center of Amtzell, within the Herzogenweiher nature reserve ( FFH area ) at an altitude of 550  m above sea level. NHN and is owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The size of the lake basin is 2.9  hectares . With an average depth of 90 centimeters (maximum depth = 1.6 meters), the volume is 26,100 cubic meters. The catchment area of ​​the Herzogenweiher covers about 543 hectares; 20 percent of this is forests and 75 percent is land used for agriculture. The shore length is approximately 780 meters.

The main inflow comes from the straightened Wiesenbach on the west bank of the pond. The drainage takes place over a ditch, the Ebersberger Mahlweiher and the Schwarzach in the Schussen or additionally over an overflow and the Haslach in the Argen in case of high water .

Herzogenweiher nature reserve

The main protection purpose of the nature reserve surrounding the pond is the preservation of the water and the adjoining reed areas and wet meadows as characteristic but highly endangered elements of the Upper Swabian cultural landscape, as an ecologically valuable retreat for rare plant and animal species and, in particular, as a resting place for bird migration. The purpose of protection also includes the goal of undoing damage that has already occurred and interventions in the past.
