history

The canton Dompierre-sur-Besbre was originally created on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the departments as part of what was then District du Donjon . With the establishment of the arrondissements, the canton was assigned to the new arrondissement of Moulins in 1801. The nationwide reorganization of the French cantons resulted in a significant expansion from nine to 32 municipalities in 2015. The nine municipalities before the reorganization were Coulanges , Diou , Dompierre-sur-Besbre , Molinet , Monétay-sur-Loire , Pierrefitte-sur-Loire , Saint-Pourçain-sur-Besbre , Saligny-sur-Roudon and Vaumas with a total area of 302.72 km ² . Before 2015, the old canton had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 0307.
