The former official palace of the Cistercian monastery Ebrach in Burgwindheim

Until the church is planted

The meaning of the place name, which can be traced back to either the settlement of a man named Wind or the Wendish past, is unclear . The jumping (Wendish) dog in the local coat of arms could be a clue. The place was first mentioned in 1140. The settlement probably goes back to the Franconian conquest of the land. In 1278 the knight Ludewig von Windeheim bequeathed his estate to the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach . 1363 Burgwindheim received by Emperor Charles IV. The market law , making it the oldest market of the Steigerwald . From 1720 to 1728 the official palace of the Ebrach Monastery was built under Abbot Wilhelm I. Sölner .

Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 the place belongs to Bavaria. The Ebrach monastery was de facto recognized as imperial immediacy only through the secularization, so that its properties did not fall temporarily to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany, like the rest of the Würzburg monastery, but remained with Bavaria.

Heiligblutbrunnen, designed by L.Dientzenhofer in 1690
Heiligblutkapelle Burgwindheim

A miracle of the hosts at the Corpus Christi procession in 1465 made Burgwindheim a place of pilgrimage. On an altar, the monstrance fell over "without outside intervention and without the influence of the wind" , the host fell to the ground. The priest could not pull them off the floor with all his might. A wooden shack was built to protect the host. The Ebrach convent prepared in an eight-day prayer to pick up the host again. It then succeeded and the Abbot of Ebrach brought them back to the parish church. The event was viewed as a miracle, and a Chapel of the Holy Blood was built two years later. The number of pilgrimages increased when a spring rose in 1625 that was soon thought to be miraculous.
