Johanna Konta (born May 17, 1991 in Sydney ) is an Australian - British tennis player . She first played for Australia, since 2012 she has played for Great Britain.

Career

Johanna Konta, granddaughter of the Hungarian national soccer player Tamás Kertész , started playing tennis at the age of eight. She has British, Australian and Hungarian citizenship.

In 2006 Konta made her debut on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour and won her first professional title in 2008. In 2009 she won a tournament in the $ 25,000 category in Waterloo for the first time , followed by her first title in the $ 50,000 category in Redding in 2010 . In the same year she played in the qualification of Copenhagen for the first time on the WTA Tour and failed in the second round. In 2011 she made her first jump into a WTA main field, but at the beginning she had to admit defeat to Lucie Šafářová . After two more tournament wins in the $ 25,000 category in Woking-Foxhill and Rancho Mirage , Konta was again in the main round of a WTA tournament in Copenhagen in 2012 and moved into the second round for the first time, profiting from the abandonment of her first-round opponent Xenija Perwak . She then received British citizenship and then received a wildcard for the main round of Wimbledon , in which she was defeated at the start by Christina McHale in the extension of the third set. At the US Open , she then qualified for the main draw, where she advanced to the second round after defeating Tímea Babos , in which she was eliminated by Wolha Hawarzowa .

Also in 2013 Konta failed at Wimbledon , again equipped with a wildcard, in the first round to Jelena Janković . She then won an ITF tournament in the $ 25,000 category in Winnipeg , before winning her biggest title to date at the $ 100.00 tournament in Vancouver the following week . The following year she pushed forward at the WTA tournaments in Nottingham and Eastbourne on turf in the second round. After many years on the ITF tour, Konta achieved international promotion in the second half of the 2015 season. In Nottingham she was in the quarter-finals of a WTA tournament for the first time and then beat a player from the top 10 of the world rankings in Eastbourne with Jekaterina Makarowa for the first time before she was also defeated there in the quarter-finals against Belinda Bencic . On the American hard court, she then started a series of 16 wins in a row and only won the ITF tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Granby , then defended her title in Vancouver and finally qualified for the main round of the US Open , where she after a success against Garbiñe Muguruza and a subsequent victory over Andrea Petković came to the round of 16, in which she was taken out of the tournament by Petra Kvitová . Subsequently, Konta reached the round of the last eight in Wuhan , also coming out of qualification, with her third top 10 win of the year against Simona Halep , in which she was defeated by Venus Williams in three sets, and thus closed the season for the first time the top 50 in the ranking.

At the beginning of 2016, Konta built on her strong results from last year and advanced to the semi-finals of the Australian Open , where she could only be beaten by the eventual winner Angelique Kerber . In Miami she was then able to move into the quarterfinals for the first time at a tournament in the Premier Mandatory category. After mixed results in Europe, where she achieved her best result in Eastbourne on grass by reaching the semi-finals, in which she was eliminated by Karolína Plíšková , she won her first WTA title in Stanford after a three-set win in the final against Venus Williams. At the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Konta then made it to the last eight, as well as at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she beat Stephanie Vogt , Caroline Garcia and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the individual competition before losing again to Angelique Kerber. In doubles , Konta reached the second round at the side of Heather Watson and was eliminated there against Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan . This was followed by her first participation in the round of 16 at the US Open , in which she was defeated by Anastasija Sevastova , before she advanced again to the quarter-finals in Asia in Wuhan and then in Beijing after victories against Karolína Plíšková and Madison Keys, her first premier mandatory -Final played, which she lost to Agnieszka Radwańska in straight sets. Thanks to the success, Konta made it into the top 10 of the world rankings and qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy 2016 in Zhuhai for the first time . There she prevailed in the group stage against Samantha Stosur and Caroline Garcia, but lost to Elina Switolina in the semifinals . At the end of the year she was named the newcomer of the year by the WTA .

At the start of the 2017 season, Konta won her second Tour title in her native Sydney ; in the final this time she defeated Agnieszka Radwańska. At the Australian Open , she then moved into the quarter-finals, which she lost to Serena Williams . Her greatest career success to date was achieved in Miami , where she celebrated her first victory at a Premier Mandatory tournament after victories over Simona Halep, Venus Williams and in the final against Caroline Wozniacki . Following a disappointing clay court season with a first round defeat at the French Open , Konta reported back on grass with another final in Nottingham , in which she was defeated by Donna Vekić . After another semifinal participation in Eastbourne , where she was also able to defeat world number one Angelique Kerber, she came in Wimbledon after a three-set win over Simona Halep for the first time under the last four, but lost there against Venus Williams. Nevertheless, in the following week she achieved fourth place, her highest world ranking position to date. Paying tribute to the efforts, Konta could not repeat their performances on the final hard court season and ended the season after reaching the quarter-finals in Cincinnati , in which she was eliminated by Simona Halep, with five defeats in a row. As in the previous year, she narrowly missed participation in the 2017 WTA Championships in Singapore as ninth in the world .

In 2018, Konta did not match the results of the last two seasons. In none of the four Grand Slam tournaments did she survive the second round. In addition, she only reached a single final on the WTA Tour, at a smaller tournament in Nottingham , but she lost the final there against Ashleigh Barty . In Miami she reached the last sixteen as defending champion, in which she was once again defeated by Venus Williams, as well as in Rome and Montreal . Only in San José could Konta attract attention when she beat Serena Williams 6-1 and 6-0 in the first round and inflicted the biggest defeat of her career on the American. By participating in the semi-finals at the end of the year at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, Konta was able to end the season among the top 40 in the ranking. It was only at the beginning of the 2019 clay court season that Konta gradually freed itself from its form depression. First she reached the final in Rabat at a smaller WTA tournament, in which she had to admit defeat to Maria Sakkari . Then she advanced to the final in Rome after victories against the top 10 players Sloane Stephens and Kiki Bertens , in which she could only be stopped by Karolína Plíšková. As a result, Konta celebrated strong results, especially in the Grand Slam tournaments. In Paris , where Konta had not previously managed to win in the main draw, she moved into the semifinals after another win against Sloane Stephens, in which she lost to Markéta Vondroušová . Also at Wimbledon, she then advanced to the round of the last eight with her twentieth top 10 win against Petra Kvitová, but there she failed against Barbora Strýcová . At the US Open , she finally also made it to the quarter-finals, where she beat the world number three Plíšková, before she was beaten by Elina Switolina in her last game of the season. Konta then ended the year in twelfth place.

In 2011, Konta made her debut for the British Fed Cup team in a 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina . Since then, she has played 30 singles and doubles games for her country, of which she has won 20 (individual balance 18: 7). In 2017 there was a scandal in the playoff match against Romania , when Romanian team captain Ilie Năstase Johanna Konta and British team captain Anne Keothavong verbally attacked Sorana Cîrstea during Konta's opening match . Because the Briton burst into tears, the encounter had to be interrupted. Năstase was then expelled from the venue until the end of the duel, which Romania won 3-2, and then banned from further Fed Cup games up to and including 2020.
