Descartes is a small town with 3489 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in France in the Indre-et-Loire in the region of Center-Val de Loire .
The city with prehistoric traces (see Dolmen Le Chillou du Feuillet ) was originally called La Haye en Touraine .
The philosopher and mathematician René Descartes was born here on March 31, 1596 . In 1802 it was renamed La Haye Descartes, and in 1967 - after being merged with Balesme - in its current name. There is now a museum in Descartes' birthplace and a 19th century monument to him on the market square.
