Existing records

World record 19.19 s JamaicaJamaica Usain Bolt 2009, World Cup Berlin , Germany August 20, 2009
European record 19.72 s ItalyItaly Pietro Mennea Mexico City , Mexico September 12, 1979
Championship record 19.85 s GreeceGreece Konstantinos Kenteris EM Munich , Germany August 9, 2002

The existing EM record was not set at these European championships and was not improved. However, all races took place under partly clear headwind conditions, so that it was hardly possible to improve the records.

doping

This competition was affected by a doping case:

The Hungarian Gábor Pásztor , who finished last in the third heat and was eliminated, was tested positive for illegal substances after his race at these European championships on July 7th. He received a four-year ban until June 7, 2020. His result from these European Championships was annulled.

execution

For this discipline, a new competition mode was used for the first time. The ten strongest athletes on the European annual best list did not yet have to compete in the preliminary round, but only entered the semi-finals.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the five fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
