The qualification was carried out in two groups. The qualification height was 2.31 m. Since only nine jumpers achieved this performance (highlighted in light blue), the final field with the next best athletes from both groups was filled to at least twelve - in this case even fourteen athletes for the final due to the same number of failed attempts at the same height (highlighted in light green). Ultimately, 2.29 m had to be achieved without any unsuccessful attempt to participate in the final.

final
August 30, 2015, 6:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. CEST )
The three top favorites for the high jump were the reigning world and European champion Bohdan Bondarenko from Ukraine, the vice world champion and Olympic third party Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar as well as the Canadian World Cup third and also Olympic third Derek Drouin. The US Olympic runner-up and fifth at the World Cup, Erik Kynard, started with good prospects for a top placement . The Olympic champion, fourth in the World Cup and third in the European Championship, Iwan Uchow was also among the participants, but was already eliminated in the qualification.
Seven high jumpers were still in the competition when the 2.33 m was raised. Bondarenko, Drouin, the Chinese Zhang Guowei and the Russian Daniil Zyplakow have not yet had any failed attempts. Barshim and Donald Thomas from the Bahamas had one failed jump, the Czech Jaroslav Bába had two failed attempts. Bondarenko, Drouin, Zhang and Barshim each jumped the new height the first time. Zyplakow and Bába were eliminated after three unsuccessful attempts, Thomas skipped the height completely.
At 2.36 m, Bondarenko, Drouin and Zhang were still tied, Barshim followed with a failed attempt. In addition, Thomas was still in the race, who had skipped the last altitude. None of the five remaining high jumpers jumped the 2.36 m, there were only unsuccessful attempts. Barshim was fourth in the final ranking with a skipped 2.33 m. Zyplakow, Thomas and Bába had each managed 2.29 m. Due to the failure rule, Zyplakow was fourth ahead of Thomas, Bába was seventh.
The gold medal now had to be awarded in the jump-off. In the fourth attempt, none of the three tied athletes jumped the required 2.36 m. Then 2.34 m were laid, which the Canadian Drouin mastered. With Bondarenko and Guowei also tearing that height, gold went to Drouin while the other two finished in tied second place.
