The Neukirchen an der Ruhr lock in the Werden district of Essen was built between 1777 and 1778. This lock, which is no longer in operation today, is located below the Baldeneysee , directly northeast of the Brehminsel .

history

Between 1774 and 1780, 16 locks were built on the Ruhr between Ruhrort and Langschede . At the insistence of Friedrich II of Prussia , the Ruhr was to be made navigable along this length, which happened despite resistance from local landlords. The Ruhraaken were only able to transport coal from Grafschaft Mark to the Rhine without reloading with the help of locks . Shipping reached its peak in 1860. At that time the Ruhr was the most traveled river in Europe. In the following years, an increasing part of the transports was taken over by the emerging railway. With the establishment of the Ruhr Valley Railway (1872 to 1876), Ruhr shipping lost its importance.

The abbot of Werden monastery , Johannes Hellersberg (abbot from 1774 to 1780), had the Neukirchen lock built from 1777 to 1778 to overcome the Neukircher Schlagd , which was used to generate energy for grain mills on both banks of the Ruhr. The lock is 42.9 meters long and 5.65 meters wide. The lock chamber had to be renewed twice in 1829 and 1844. For the last renovation, the mill building of the former grain mill on the lock island was added. The building is now called the White Mill because of the paintwork and has housed part of the Folkwang University since 2003 . The Neukircher harbor was also here , a security harbor where the coal ships could spend the winter.

Before the Neukirchen lock was placed under monument protection in 1984 and restored by the State Office for Water and Waste Management Düsseldorf (StAWA) in 1986 and 1987 , it was built over several times.

Technical specifications

When the Baldeneysee was dammed in 1933 to improve the water quality, the Neukirchen lock fell dry because it has since been located below the large new dam. The water level sank by 3.70 meters and the former impact was removed. Since then, shipping has been using the Baldeneyer lock with the normal course of the river.
