The Parwa liga 2016/17 was the 93rd season of the highest Bulgarian football league . The season began on July 29, 2016 and ended on June 4, 2017. It was the first season under the reformed mode of the Parwa liga (German First League).
As the defending champion Ludogorez Razgrad went into the season.

The 14 clubs initially played the regular season in a double round. This table served as the basis for qualifying for various placement rounds. The six best-placed clubs reached the championship round, the teams in places seven to fourteen played in the relegation round for a possible international starting place and determined the teams that took part in the relegation.

Championship round
The six best-placed clubs in the regular season reached the championship round, in which, in addition to the championship, it was also a question of international places in the European Cup . The champions qualified for the second qualifying round for the Champions League and the runner-up took part in the Europa League playoffs. The third-placed reached the qualifying rounds of the Europa League .
Another double round was played between the six clubs, with all results from the regular season being carried over.

Relegation round
The teams in places 7 to 14 of the regular season were divided into two play-off groups using the serpentine method. The two best clubs in each group qualify for the Europa League playoff, while the two worst clubs had to continue to play in order to remain in the Parwa Liga .
Another double round was played between the four clubs of each group, with all results from the preliminary round being carried over.

Qualifying matches
UEFA Europa League
The two best-placed clubs in each group of the play-offs, as well as the third-placed team in the championship round, played another starting place in the UEFA Europa League in three rounds, each with a home and away leg . The four teams from the play-offs determined in the first two rounds the club that competed in the third round against the third-placed team from the championship round. The winner of this game then started in the first qualifying round of the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League .

The second round matches between Wereja Stara Sagora and Botev Plovdiv were to take place on May 27th and 30th, 2017. On May 24, 2017, Botev Plovdiv won the Bulgarian Football Cup and qualified for the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League . The games of this round were canceled, with Wereja qualifying directly for the third round.

Relegation
The two worst-placed clubs in the Parwa liga, as well as the second and third placed clubs in the Wtora liga , played in the relegation over three rounds. Initially, the last two teams competed in two games in the first round.
In the second round, the two winners and the two losers met. The winner of the winning round took 11th place and will also play in the Parwa league the following season. The loser of the losers' round finished in 14th place and was relegated.
The other two clubs played in the third round against the second and third of the Wtora league. The two winners qualified for the Parwa liga , while the losers play in the Wtora liga.
