The Scottish League Cup was played for the 33rd time in 1978/79 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 16, 1978 and ended with the final on March 31, 1979 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . The defending champions Glasgow Rangers were able to successfully defend the league cup. In the final, the Rangers defeated FC Aberdeen and were able to win their 10th title in the League Cup. Before the final, the Rangers were the record winners of the competition.
