The HC Slovan Bratislava ( Slovak HC Slovan Bratislava ) is an ice hockey club in the city of Bratislava in Slovakia , which was founded in 1921 as the 1st ČsŠK Bratislava and has been playing in the Tipsport Extraliga again since 2019 . Between 1945 and 1993 the team competed in the Czechoslovakian extra league and from 1993 to 2012 in the extra league. Between 2012 and 2019 the club belonged to the Continental Hockey League , but had to withdraw in 2019 for financial reasons. The club plays its home games in the Zimný štadión Ondreja Nepelu , which holds 10,110 spectators.

history

Three years after it was founded, in December 1924, the team at the time played its first international match against the Vienna EV - the game was lost 6-1. The association was renamed Slovan in 1939 and has kept this name to this day. As Slovan ChZJD Bratislava, the club celebrated three times tournament win at the Spengler Cup in Davos between 1972 and 1974 . The club celebrated its greatest successes in the 1978/79 season , when it won the title of Czechoslovakian champion . The brothers Anton Šťastný , Marián Šťastný and Peter Šťastný played a major role in this success .

Since the establishment of the Slovak Extraliga, Slovan has won the championship eight times - in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2012. The club also won the IIHF Continental Cup in 2004 . From the 2012/13 season , the club played as part of a league expansion in the multinational Continental Hockey League and twice reached the KHL play-offs in the following years.

On May 28, 2019, the club announced that it would withdraw from the KHL for financial reasons for the coming season and submit an application for the domestic extra league. This step had become necessary due to a failed investor contract. In addition, the association had debts of more than one million euros with a subsidiary of the city of Bratislava. Furthermore, the club had accumulated unpaid salaries for players and employees of up to 60 million euros, which jeopardized the licensing for the extra league. In August 2019, HC Slovan agreed on a payment plan with all former players and employees and thereby received the Extraliga license.
