history
Le Touquet was founded in the 19th century and was initially mainly visited by the English ; the name extension Paris-Plage can be traced back to the fact that the place later became one of the preferred bathing beaches of the Parisian population - probably due to its convenient connections . (Le Touquet is close to Route nationale 1 and on the Paris – Calais – London line.)
politics
Daniel Fasquelle (LR) has been mayor again since the 2020 local elections, after having won his list (div.) With 51.05% (1,370 votes) ahead of Juliette Bernard (Div C.) with 48.95% (1,659 votes) Has.
Attractions
The outstanding feature of the spa and climatic health resort , in addition to the casino and the golf courses, is the fine sandy beach, which extends twelve kilometers to the south from the mouth of the Cane and is sufficiently wide even at high tide . A pine forest on the edge of the town center, which was created in 1855, has hardly any tourist value, as it was largely parceled out and built on with villas.
traffic
In the east of the city, Départementsstraße 940 leads on a bridge over the Canche to Étaples. The A16 autoroute runs further east and can be reached via junction 26 (Ètaples). Étaples is also home to the Étaples-Le Touquet train station on the Paris - Boulogne-sur-Mer line, which is served by French Intercités in addition to the TER Nord-Pas-de-Calais regional service. The Touquet-Cote d'Opale Airport is located in the northeastern area of the river mouth. It is mainly used for sports and leisure purposes. Three flight schools, including two for helicopter flights, are located there.
Sports facilities
From 1903 to 1905 Pierre de Coubertin was the sports director of Le Touquet, which was essentially built up by English investors. Here he was able to realize his ideas of ideal, beautiful sports facilities, where he was able to shape John Ruskin's ideal of beauty with the sports-technical needs for an international clientele. For Coubertin, a sports paradise was created that has largely retained its unique character to this day. The tennis stadium in Le Touquet is named after him.
Motorsport
Le Touquet is also famous for its motorcycle dune rally Enduro du Touquet , known since the 1970s , which takes place every year in February or March and is visited from all over the world. From 2006, the race will be moved from the dunes to the beach and renamed Enduropale - primarily for nature conservation reasons . Around 1,000 enduro pilots race on the beach for three hours. The winner is whoever has driven the most laps (approx. 16 km). The fastest participant drives a top speed of over 200 km / h on the beach. In 2005, 450,000 spectators followed the event at Paris-Plage, making Le Touquet the largest motorsport event in the world. The best non-French participant in the 1st Enduropale Touquet 2006 was Dirk Röhm from Beach Racing Team Germany.
