Template:Big Brother housemates Big Brother 2007 is the eighth and current series of the United Kingdom reality television programme Big Brother, airing on Channel 4, with a number of closely associated programmes also airing on E4.[1]

The series began on 30 May 2007, when eleven female contestants entered the house.[2] A male housemate joined two days later,[3] with a further two male contestants being added a week after that. Another four men joined on 15 June.[4]

This is the first Big Brother series to air in the UK since the controversial 2007 Celebrity Big Brother, and a number of changes have been made to the show, including the omission of text message voting, and a reduction in the cost of calls to vote for evictions from 50p to 25p. At least 10p from each vote will go to charity, and Channel 4 has announced it is to make no profit from voting fees this series.[5]

Auditions

The first round of auditions started on 6 January 2007[6] at the SECC in Glasgow, where there was a queue of three hundred people.[7] Auditions were also held in Birmingham, Cardiff, Dublin, London, Manchester, and Newcastle.[8]

Sponsorship

On 8 March 2007, it was announced that The Carphone Warehouse would not return to sponsor Big Brother 2007 after cancelling its sponsorship of Celebrity Big Brother 2007,[9] and on 21 March, that Virgin Media would sponsor the show, for a reported £3 million.[10] Virgin Media's idents for the show use footage from Big Brother programmes from all around the world.[2]

The iconic Big Brother eye has been redesigned to what has been described as a "centrifugal inter-locking RGB rainbow test card"[11] by its designer Daniel Eatock.[12] He had also confirmed that this year's logo "has a very special meaning that will be revealed come launch night",[13] however, no official confirmation was made. Although there was no official confirmation, insiders working at Big Brother revealed the secret meaning of the Big Brother logo. This year, on the show's titles and other teasers, the logo is seen rotating many parts of its eye. A show insider revealed that the rotating parts represented secret rooms in the Big Brother house which will rotate.[14]

Broadcasts

On 4 April 2007, it was announced that Russell Brand had quit the spin off show Big Brother's Big Mouth.[15] As a replacement there was to be a guest host each week on Big Brother's Big Mouth, starting with Chris Moyles who presented the first three editions from launch night,[16] and was succeeded by George Galloway, a Respect Party MP, and former Celebrity Big Brother contestant.[17] Alexa Chung and Keith Lemon next presented Big Brother's Big Mouth for a week and 3 days each, respectively.

Dermot O'Leary returned again to present Big Brother's Little Brother and, despite rumours printed in the Daily Mail, Davina McCall has also returned to present the live eviction shows as well as a spin-off show; Big Brother On The Couch which airs as an hour long show each Sunday[1] and replaced Big Brother's Big Brain, which was axed.[18]

Before the launch programme, Channel 4 presented a statement from Ofcom explaining the racism incidents from Celebrity Big Brother earlier in the year. The statement said:

"This is a summary of findings from Ofcom, the communications regulator, about the Channel 4 series "Celebrity Big Brother."

In January 2007, Ofcom received over 44,500 complaints, mainly about potentially racist material.

Ofcom has concluded that Channel 4 failed to handle appropriately the strong content it was transmitting. This resulted in breaches of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code, which is designed to ensure that when broadcasters show potentially offensive material, they do so in a way which offers adequate protection to the viewer.

Ofcom has found that Channel 4 breached the Code on three separate occasions. Its decision to repeat one of these incidents in its early morning show resulted in a further breach for failing to protect children.

There was also a serious failure in Channel 4's compliance processes which meant that it was not aware of all the relevant activity in the House at a particularly critical time. This compounded its failure to ensure compliance with the Code.

These are significant failings. Ofcom has therefore imposed a formal sanction on Channel Four, directing it to broadcast this statement. This ensures that the largest number of viewers will be made fully aware of the seriousness of Channel 4's failure to comply.

This was followed immediately by a Channel 4 ident, and then the Big Brother titles. Channel 4 also broadcast the Ofcom statement on the morning of 31 May 2007 before the early morning repeat, and have been directed by Ofcom to display it again immediately before the first eviction on Friday 15 June.[19]

Ratings

The launch show was the fourth most watched launch show in Big Brother UK history by attracting an average of 6.2 million viewers. The number of viewers rose to 8 million after The British Soap Awards on ITV1 and The Apprentice on BBC One ended. The next night saw a traditional drop in ratings with the show shedding more than 2 million viewers while 4 million people watched the first highlights show of the series, which was 22% of the television audience between 10:00 and 11:05.[20] Despite the promising launch show ratings, the two Friday shows did not fare well in the ratings with the first show attracting 3.3 million people (15%).[21] Although this show was up against Match of the Day Live which aired England's first match at the new Wembley stadium. However, at 10:30, the second Big Brother show, which showed the entrance of the first male contestant, was watched by 4.3 million viewers (24.6%).[22] 4.6 million viewers watched the highlights show on 7 June which contained Emily's ejection from the Big Brother House due to using a racial slur.[23] This was the second-highest viewed show of the series after the live launch at the time. The show's second full week, rated as one of the lowest watched weeks in Big Brother history with the week averaging 2.83m (12.7%). The ratings were reduced to 2.11m on Wednesday night and the Friday night eviction shows rated as the lowest eviction shows in Big Brother history, with 3.1m (13.7%) watching at 8:30, and 3.0m (13.3%) at 10:00.[24] The series average is around 3.6 million with a 18% share.[25] Since ITV's Britain's Got Talent has concluded, Big Brother has returned to viewing figures of around 4 million per night. [26] When the Friday 8th July twist was revealed, ratings were picking up yet again - returning Big Brother to it's usual high rated status.

House

After previous speculation that Big Brother 2007 would be broadcast from a new location in Hammersmith, it was confirmed that the series would still be broadcast from Elstree. However, it will be the last series to be so, with a new house being built in Hammersmith for 2008.[27]

Main area

The layout of the house remains much the same as the previous series, although the kitchen has moved to the other side of the main living area.[2] Many of the kitchen appliances are scattered around the house, with the oven and heat proof surface in the bedroom and the fridge in the garden while the old kitchen area has been replaced with a bath and kitchen sink.[28]

The bedroom contains a single, double and triple bed as well as two four person beds. Outside the bedroom window, in the main living area, is a lip shaped sofa that the presenters of the show refer to as "the lips". The house also contains a salon/bathroom, which houses two large hair dryers and two steam suits.[2]

Garden

As well as the kitchen fridge the garden contains a swimming pool, a seating area and, due to the smoking ban that came into effect in all public places during the series, a smoking area which housemates had to use from 1 July.[27] This was checked by health officials, and deemed acceptable. [29]

The grass from the previous series has been replaced with AstroTurf.

"The Insider" on BBLB revealed that there is a fully-functioning washing machine in the garden, that has been there since Day 1.

On Day 25 it was revealed that a caravan is hidden behind a garden wall. The caravan comes complete with two single beds and sleeping bags. Brian and Charley went "on holiday" to the caravan for one night.[30] The caravan was again accessible on day 36, this time any of the housemates were allowed to use the room. [31]

Diary room

A corridor was added between the diary room door and the main house which changes colour from red to blue to green when the "eye" button to open the door is pressed. The diary room chair has been changed to a much larger see-through chair which contains white neon lights.[2]

Vestibule

Between the entrance/exit stairs and the main house is a vestibule area. This has been used for several tasks, rewards and punishments, such as Ziggy's dating task, Amanda and Sam's birthday party and the "Sin Bin". It is also the room Charley was made to stay in after the rest of the housemates had their sin party.[32]

Hidden rooms

A room, that is only accessible by the door to the left in the diary room, has been used twice so far in the series as a "secret" room. It was used as a "The Happy Room" to cheer up Charley and Billi, who where instructed to wear "happy" t-shirts and baseball caps for the duration of their stay. The room was full of red beanbags, and featured cheery slogans on the walls. While in the room, Big Brother played the tune, If You're Happy and You Know It. [33][34]. During the seven deadly sins task, it was named "The Room of Nicky" and contained pictures, books and footage of Nicky and also a sofa with cushions spelling N-I-C-K-Y. Nicky was instructed to stay in the room and learn to appreciate herself until Big Brother allowed her to leave.[35]

The bedroom for fake housemate "Pauline" is situated just off the storeroom. It is Australia-themed and contains a kangaroo statue, a surfboard, plants and beanbags. The bedroom also contained the dossier from which "Pauline" could find out things about her housemates. Only "Pauline" was allowed in the room at that time.[36].

Rumoured areas

Big Brother has apparently hidden a seedy Soho Nightclub in the house, complete with red leather bar stools, a cocktail bar and a pole for girls to dance on. [37]

Housemates claim to have found two secret rooms in the house. They discovered a hidden basement after housemate Emily found a window in the swimming pool in Week 1. When she left the house, she revealed the housemates had discovered another secret room, through a door in the bedroom. [37]

A secret garden is hidden away from the rest of the garden, but it is not yet known how it will be accessed.[38]

Housemates

There are eighteen housemates in total in this series of Big Brother. Twelve are currently participating in the UK where they are observed by television viewers 24 hours a day. Each week, two or more housemates will be nominated to be evicted by the general public until the winner is left. All of the housemates that entered on the first day were female, then on the third day; a male housemate - Ziggy - entered the house.[39] On June 7, 2007 it was announced on Big Brother's Big Mouth that Day 10 would see the addition of two male housemates, in replacement of the cancelled eviction.[17] These two housemates were Gerry and Seány. On June 15, four new male housemates entered the house. They were Billi, Jonathan, Liam, and Brian.[4][40] A new housemate called "Pauline" entered the house on 8 July, supposedly from Big Brother Australia, however, her true identity was actress Thaila Zucchi, and worked as a mole for Big Brother, before being removed on Day 43.

Amanda

Amanda Louise Marchant[41] (born 26 June 1988) is one half of the first set of twins ever to appear on Big Brother in the UK, alongside her sister, Sam. She is a social-care student from Newcastle-under-Lyme.[42] The pair celebrated their birthday on Day 28.[43].

Billi

Billi Bhatti (born November 1981) is a 25 year old male from Uxbridge. He is a model who has appeared in several music videos, including the one for Jamelia's Beware of the Dog.[44] His model stage name is Massimo. He is a big wrestling fan, and has attended the last few WrestleMania events. He has a fondness for Page 3 girls. He says that "gorgeous girls, money and attention" make him happy. He is confident, admits to being vain and says looking out for himself is number one. He enjoys going to the gym and plays football regularly.[45] He was evicted on day 31.[46]

Brian

Olawale Mohammed "Brian" Belo[41] (born 10 July 1987) is a data clerk from Essex. He believes in Cosmic Ordering, says he can self-hypnotize, and enjoys talking to imaginary hot girls. He says he's a leader rather than a follower and an "original party boy with lots of sex appeal".[47] He celebrated his birthday on Day 42.

Carole

Carole Ann Vincent[48] (born May 1954) is a bisexual former sexual health worker, political activist and demonstrator from East London.[49] She has been arrested on numerous occasions for breaching the peace during demonstrations.[2] She was given the loudest and most positive applause from the audience on entering the house on the launch night.[2] She stood for the Respect Party in the Markhouse Ward of Walthamstow in the 2006 UK Local Election.[48]. She once went to a Scissor Sisters concert dressed as a mobile phone.[50]

Chanelle

Chanelle Hayes (born 11 November 1987) is a student from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, studying Spanish, music and English at North-East-Wakefield College, Pontefract.[51] She models herself on Victoria Beckham. She was adopted at a young age, after her mother was murdered. [52] Chanelle started a relationship with fellow housemate Ziggy in the house, though they split up and got back together several times during the series. [53][54][55][56]

Charley

Charley Kazim Uchea[41] (born 30 June 1985) is an unemployed self-styled 'it girl' from South-East London. She is a former lapdancer from Stringfellow's Nightclub (although she was fired twice for her over ostentatious dances[57]) and first cousin to Manchester United footballer Kieran Richardson. Charley's entry was speculated by the British tabloid press.[58] She was negatively received by the live audience on the launch night.[59] Whilst being in the house Charley has claimed to have 'raved' with footballers such as Frank Lampard and John Terry, however, outside the house the footballers have denied such rumours.[60] Charley celebrated her birthday on Day 32.[61]

Emily

Emily Elizabeth Parr[41] (born 15 April 1988) is a drama student from Downend,[62] near Bristol, who is told she resembles Peaches Geldof. She describes herself as an "indie rock and roll queen" and highly intelligent, saying she could read from the age of two.[63] Emily was put up for eviction in the first round of nominations. Only Ziggy could nominate, and they did not see eye to eye[64]. However she was removed from the house as she was heard using the word "nigger" in reference to fellow housemate Charley.[65] This was due to stricter rules imposed by Big Brother[66] which have been put into place after the previous series of Celebrity Big Brother which caused controversy due to remarks made about Shilpa Shetty. Emily was called to the diary room to discuss this with Big Brother during the early hours, and had to leave without any further contact with the other housemates.[67]

Gerry

Gerasimos Vallerios "Gerry" Stergiopoulos[68] (Greek: Γεράσιμος Βαλλέριος Στεργιόπουλος) (born 1976) is a 31 year old, originally from Patras in Greece. He moved to the UK in 1995.[69] In his entry video, he claimed to be 29 years old. He has a Degree in Art, another in History and an MPhil in Fine Art. In 2002 he contributed a chapter to a book entitled Cult and Death, about archaeology and ancient history.[68] He was the 13th housemate to enter the house. He kissed fellow housemate Seány on 18th June during a game of Truth Or Dare, sharing the first gay kiss of UK Big Brother 8.[70]

Jonathan

Main article: Jonathan Durden

Jonathan Durden (born 1957) entered on Day 17. He is a 49 year old millionaire from Islington. He is widowed with two children, and postponed his wedding to his current fiancée to appear on Big Brother,[71] though he claims to have not seen Big Brother before.[72] He loves cars, and his friends tell him he looks like an Oompa-Loompa.[72] He was also one of the people featured in the show "The Secret Millionaire" where he, and other millionaires, selected members of the public to receive gifts. Jonathan walked on day 35 after being informed his 104 year old grandmother had died.[73]

Laura

Laura Jane Williams[74] (born September 1983) is a nanny from Rhondda, South Wales. She wants to train to be an embalmer.[75] Laura says her friends have likened her to television character Vicky Pollard and comedian Peter Kay.[76] She was evicted on Day 38. [77]. In her 38 days in the house, she spent over 400 hours in bed. [78]

Lesley

Lesley Brain (born 13 February 1947) is a retired head-hunter and former stand-up comedienne from Gloucestershire.[79] She claims to be an acquaintance of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. She is currently living off capital from her previous business.[2]. She is the oldest non-celebrity housemate to join the UK Big Brother House so far.[80] Lesley voluntarily left the House on Day 11.[81]

Liam

Liam Andrew McGough (born 1984)[41] is a tree surgeon from Lanchester, County Durham. He likes reading, family, and having nights out. He has a habit of sucking his thumb at night.[82] In the third week, Seany, Jonathan and Carole (the three people nominated for eviction that week) had to decide who out of the remaining housemates would win £100,000 - they unanimously decided Liam.[83]

Nicky

Nicky Maxwell (born 3 June 1979) is a bank worker, born in Mumbai but now living in Watford. She was adopted at the age of 1 from Mother Teresa's orphanage,[84] and is a Roman Catholic[85] who "drinks, smokes and parties hard."[84] Her half brother, Dev Patel appears in the British teen television drama Skins, playing Anwar Kharral. In her audition tape she said that she did not like men because of their "bullshit".[2] On Day 5, she celebrated her birthday in the house. She kissed fellow housemate Liam on 18 June during a game of Truth Or Dare, and has admitted to having feelings for him.[86]

Sam

Samantha Joanne Marchant[41] (born 26 June 1988) is one half of the first set of twins ever to appear on Big Brother in the UK, alongside her sister, Amanda. She is a social-care student from Newcastle-under-Lyme.[42] The pair celebrated their birthday on Day 28.[43]

Seány

Seán "Seány" O'Kane (born 1982) is a gay charity worker. He was born in Northern Ireland, but currently resides in Manchester.[87][88] He appeared in the 2002 movie Bloody Sunday[89]. He took leave from his job as a race relations worker in order to attend the verdict of the trial of Michael Jackson.[90][91] He has also stated that he converted to Islam in 2003, and practised the religion for a short time,[92] but stopped after believing it to be in conflict with his homosexuality.[93] He kissed fellow housemate Gerry on 18th June.[70] Seány was the second person to be evicted from the Big Brother house, as he left on Day 24. He was visibly shocked as Davina announced live that he had received the most votes from the public and that he would be leaving the Big Brother House.[94]

Shabnam

Shabnam Paryani (born October 1984) is a receptionist from North London who describes herself as "an enigma" and "crazy". She enjoys clashing her make-up.[95] She had previously appeared on the Channel 4 programme Embarrassing Illnesses complaining of a "flaky scalp"[96] and made it to the panel auditions on Britain's Got Talent. [97] Shabnam was put up for eviction in the first round of nominations but the eviction was cancelled.[64] She was evicted on Day 17.[98]

Thaila "Pauline"

Thaila Lucia Zucchi is an actress from Isleworth. She was one of five members of the now defunct pop group allSTARS*. As an actress, Thaila has starred in numerous popular television shows, including the Channel 4 series Balls of Steel, The IT Crowd and Star Stories. She entered the House on Day 40 under the fake identity of "Pauline", a housemate from the Australian series of Big Brother, and was Big Brother's mole. She was not be eligible to win. [99] She was voted the most fake housemate for a task set by Big Brother. She was sent to the diary room and congratulated housemates on uncovering her true identity."Too Fake". Channel 4. Tracey

Tracey Anne Barnard[74] (born 5 June 1970)[2] is a cleaner from Cambridgeshire.[100] She enjoys raving, rates herself "ten out of ten for weirdness", likens herself to Julie Walters, collects carrier bags[101] and according to Davina, when evicted she will wear "just a smile".[2] On Day 7, she celebrated her birthday in the house. The press has reported that Tracey may be communicating with the outside world using phrases such as, "'ave it," breaking a fundamental rule of Big Brother.[102]

Ziggy

Zachary Sami "Ziggy" Lichman[74] (born 5 January 1981) is a French Connection male model from North London, and a former member of the boy band Northern Line.[3] He had also previously appeared in an E4 television show called Five Go Dating[103]. He was the first male to enter the house, entering on Day 3. As part of a nomination twist, Ziggy was the only person to nominate in Week 1.[3] Ziggy has said he is Jewish.[85] On June 8, Ziggy kissed fellow housemate Chanelle while in bed.[104] He is set to be the new face of Lynx, after arranging a deal before entering the house. [105] He ended his relationship with Chanelle on Day 23[106] after allegedly having sex with her on 19th June[107], though the couple made up later that day.[54] They have split up and got back together several times during the series. [108][109][110]

Weekly summary

Week 1 Tasks On Day 2 the housemates were given a breakdancing task, they were split into two crews and competed against each other.[111] On Day 3 Shabnam and Carole conducted a podcast by order of Big Brother. The podcast is a weekly task taking part on Fridays and is available for download on the Channel 4 website. On Day 10 Lesley hosted the weekly podcast.[112]
Punishments On Day 6, Shabnam was punished for discussing nominations, and Big Brother made the bathroom off-limits to all housemates.[113] On Day 8, Ziggy and Emily were punished by being forced to pick another housemate to be punished on their behalf. They chose Shabnam. As a result, Shabnam's clothes, make-up, and belongings were confiscated by Big Brother.[114][115] Emily was asked to leave after saying a racially offensive word.
Entrances Sam, Amanda, Lesley, Charley, Tracey, Chanelle, Shabnam, Emily, Laura, Nicky and Carole entered on Day 1, Ziggy entered on Day 3, Gerry and Seány entered on Day 10.
Exits Emily was ejected on Day 9.[65]
Week 2 Tasks Big Brother gave the housemates a charades task with a twist of having to play it under water. As a prize for completing the task successfully, housemates were rewarded with a chinese take away meal.[116] On Day 12 Gerry and Seány were instructed by Big Brother to interview each of their fellow housemates in the "Big Brother Board Room" (the vestibule before the front door of the House) to decide which two housemates would be nominating along side them.[117] On day 14 the housemates were given a shopping task which instructed them to remain lying down (but moving), dressed in sardine suits in a sardine tin filled with brine and fish guts.[118] The housemates failed the task after only remaining in the tin for one hour and 26 minutes. Hidden in a small sardine tin in the garden was the magic number, four hours and 20 minutes, this was the time limited Big Brother had set for the housemates to remain in the tin in order to win the task.[119] On Day 15, the house were given a pile of pork pies and tankards of beer, and a dart board. On the bottom of each pie, there was a conversation topic, and all housemates had to contribute to the discussions. Afterwards, all housemates had to nominate one person to put up a set of shelves in the Diary Room without instructions. [120] The housemates chose Carole, who failed the task [121] Seany and Gerry conducted the weekly podcast.
Punishments On Day 14, due to Gerry and other housemates discussing nominations, Big Brother took away the house's bathroom privileges.[122] Seány pushed a pork pie into the diary room camera, and as punishment Nicky had to clean the windows for two hours.[123]
Entrances Billi, Jonathan, Liam, and Brian entered on Day 17[4]
Exits Lesley left voluntarily on Day 11.[124] Shabnam was evicted on Day 17.[125]
Week 3 Tasks On Day 18, Billi, Jonathan, Liam and Brian succesfully performed "YMCA" as 'The Big Brother Village People'[126] and won a luxury shopping budget.[127] Housemates also had to swim the equivalent distance to the width of the English Channel in the swimming pool for this week's shopping task, which they sucessfully completed. [128] Amanda, for completing the most lengths, was given the task of completing the shopping list for this week, alone. [129] On Day 22, Seány, Carole and Jonathan had to choose a housemate to receive what the housemates believe is the £100,000 prize fund. They chose Liam.[83] Billi, Brian, Jonathan and Liam conducted the weekly podcast. [130]
Punishments After using written communication, Ziggy and Carole were given chalk and school ties, and were made to write "I must not participate in written communication within the Big Brother house. This is a fundamental breach of the Big Brother Rules, for which I apologise." and "I must not take writing materials lent to me in good faith by Big Brother and then use this writing material to communicate secret messages. Both acts are a fundamental breach of the Big Brother Rules, for which I apologise." 100 times. [131]
Exits Seány was evicted on Day 24.[132]
Week 4 Tasks On Day 25, the housemates had a Knobbly Knees Contest, in which Brian and Charley won. Their prize was a holiday in the Big Brother caravan.[133] On Day 26, they were told that for this week's task, the housemates must stay awake for 60 hours, and were only allowed 3 hours of sleep between them, and if someone closed their eyes for more than a minute, a clock on the wall would begin counting down.[134]. For a mini task on Day 27, Liam and Laura were dressed up as Little Bo Peep, and had to correctly count how many times the other housemates - who were dressed as sheep - jumped over fences placed in the garden. They completed this task successfully, and earned an extra hour on the sleep clock. [135] However, the housemates voted and decided to quit the task, [136] and subsequently failed the task.[137] Amanda, Brian, Laura and Ziggy conducted the weekly podcast. [138]
Punishments For discussing nominations with other housemates, both Billi and Charley's nominations were cancelled. [139] For failing their sleep task, housemates were forced to live on a diet of 3 portions of slop a day.[140] After Billi and Charley continuously argued, they were sent to the happy room to cheer up.[33]
Exits Billi was evicted on Day 31.[46]
Week 5 Tasks Carole had to match the seven deadly sins to housemates. She picked Laura as sloth[141], Tracey as greed[142], Ziggy as gluttony[143], Liam as lust[144], Amanda as pride[145], Nicky as envy[32], and Charley as wrath[146]. Each housemate was given their own task. Four or more housemates must pass this task to receive a luxury shopping budget. All but Charley passed. As a reward, The contestants were given a party with a chocolate fountain, alcohol and "Seven Sin costumes" while Charley sat in the Sin Bin watching them and missing the party.
Exits Jonathan left voluntarily on Day 35.[73]

Laura was evicted on Day 38 [147]

Week 6 Tasks Unbeknownst to the housemates, their task this week is to discover that their new housemate Pauline, is really British actress, Thaila Zucchi. They were successful, and received a luxury shopping budget.[148] They also were given characters and a storyline, and had to perform their own soap opera, Housemates. [149]
Punishments As part of fake week, the housemates were punished for crimes they did not commit. Carole, Brian and Amanda had to glue sweetcorn back onto corn on the cob.[150]

Criticism and controversy

Nine days into the new series, Channel 4 was criticised for deciding to air the word "nigger" on their daily highlights show.[152] After the criticism they received for not handling the Celebrity Big Brother racism allegations properly back in January, they were quick to intervene after Emily used the word in conversation with Charley. On the other hand, Charley and Nicky subsequently used the same contentious word several times, in reference to Emily's use. No action was seen to be taken against them.[67] After Emily's disqualification from the competition was announced, 922 viewers complained to Ofcom, the British television regulator believing that it was unfair.[153] Another 270 people expressed dissatisfaction with Channel 4's decision to air the word "nigger" uncensored.[153]

Furthermore, on Day 40, Channel 4 confirmed that Charley had been called to the Diary Room and reprimanded after using the word "nigger" twice on one night. This was not broadcast on the nightly highlights programme or the live feed. A Big Brother spokesperson claimed "Charley used the N-word as a black woman to refer to another black person. We judged her use of the term different from Emily's. But Big Brother called her to the Diary Room to remind her that this word could cause offence." [154][155]

Big Brother bosses have also been accused of deliberately engineering the nominations process in order to keep volatile housemate Charley in and as a result, viewers watching. [156]

Template:Fnb Ziggy was told by Big Brother that he would be the only housemate allowed to nominate for the first eviction vote on Day 7.[3] The eviction was later cancelled due to Emily being removed before the eviction could take place.[157]

Template:Fnb New housemates Seány and Gerry were two of four housemates allowed to nominate, and together they had to choose the other two housemates nominating with them. They chose Sam and Amanda to nominate.

Template:Fnb Nicky and Charley were among those receiving the most nominations, but Billi and Charley's nominations were discounted so Nicky and Charley did not face the public vote.[139]
