The 1983/84 season of the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey was the eleventh season of the second highest German ice hockey league . In contrast to the previous season , the league was played on two tracks again, only the EHC Essen-West made it to the top division in the final relegation round to the Bundesliga . The EC Peiting and the EC Oberstdorf had to relegate to the league , while the Hamburger SV withdrew voluntarily from the league.

In contrast to the previous season , the league was played on two tracks again. The Group North started with nine teams, the game operation of the Group South took ten clubs participate. First, a preliminary round was played in the form of a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams in its group. Then the best six teams from both groups took part in the final round, while the remaining teams had to play in the relegation rounds in the north and south for their starting place in the league.

The final round was played in the form of two groups as a single round, after which the two best teams took part in the relegation round to the Bundesliga . The relegation round was played in one group in the north and in two groups in the south.
