ATOM ( Russian Атом (БМП) ) is the name of a Russian / French 8 × 8 Radschützenpanzers .

Project history

In 2013, the Russian armaments company Uralwagonsawod and the military division of Renault Trucks presented a cooperation program with the aim of developing a heavy armored vehicle that meets national and international requirements. The ATOM, first presented in 2013 in Nizhny Tagil , is based on the French VBCI armored car from Renault and Nexter .

The ATOM represents Uralwagonzavod's entry into the market for wheeled armored vehicles and reflects the company's strategy of completing its traditional tracked vehicle production base with wheeled vehicle platforms. With the help of western technology, a competitive product should gain market access.

Due to the EU sanction because of Russia's involvement in the Ukraine war , Renault had to withdraw from the binational project. The vehicle project is to be continued anyway. Russian media report that experts from the United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan are supposed to compensate for the loss of know-how caused by the French withdrawal.

Technology and armament

Interior of the ATOM

The ATOM serves, so to speak, as a platform for various modules. This includes troop transports, command vehicles, combat electronics, combat technology and rescue as well as fire support platforms, which include a range of guns from 57 to 120 mm. The concept of a standardized driving module with exchangeable mission modules is already known from the German GTK Boxer . The ATOM is buoyant and is driven by two water jet drives mounted on the vehicle hull . In contrast to the French VBCI, the ATOM presented in 2013 is equipped with a remote-controlled turret that contains a 57-mm cannon of Russian production. The cannon has a rate of fire of 120 to 140 rounds per minute with an effective range of up to six kilometers. The ammunition supply includes 80-100 rounds. The tower is only mounted on the tub and is thus separated from the interior. The armor can be reinforced with reactive and cage armor . The cabin has four skylights and a rear ramp for getting in and out. ATOM can travel on the road at a speed of 100 km / h and should have a range of 750 km.
