Railway stations in Berlin |
The Berlin-Charlottenburg train station is located in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district . In the train station, the Berlin light rail system changes to the Wetzlarer Bahn, which begins here, and the Hamburg light rail connection .
The Charlottenburg marshalling yard was attached to the passenger station. There the light rail trains were supplied with coal and water until they were electrified.
The station is served by the lines S3, S5, S7 and S9 of the Berlin S-Bahn and regional trains of the DB Regio .
history
The station was opened in the course of the construction of the light rail as its western terminus on February 7, 1882. The old station building on Stuttgarter Platz was badly damaged in World War II and provisionally restored.
From the end of the Second World War until the withdrawal of the Allies from Germany, there was also an extraterritorial area reserved for the Allies in the Charlottenburg train station ( platform with entrances). This special area in Charlottenburg was reserved for the British Allies. Other special Allied stations (also with extra-territorial zones) were Wünsdorf (near Zossen ) for the Soviet troops, Lichterfelde West station for the US troops and Tegel station for the French troops.
To convert Wilmersdorfer Straße into a pedestrian zone, a new connection to Kurfürstendamm had to be created. As an extension of Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße, a street breakthrough for Lewishamstraße was created in the area of the train station. The new station building required was inaugurated on July 6, 1971. The architect was Günter Hönow . When the operation of the S-Bahn in West Berlin was transferred from the Deutsche Reichsbahn to the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) on January 9, 1984 , the first BVG-directed train started at Charlottenburg station at 4 a.m. to travel to Friedrichstrasse station .
At the beginning of 2003, construction work began to make it easier to change to the U7 line of the Berlin subway at Wilmersdorfer Straße station. The two platforms of the S-Bahn were demolished and modernized around 200 meters further east. As part of this measure, the western station access was given up and an additional access was created at the eastern end of the new S-Bahn platforms. The first (northern) new S-Bahn platform went into operation on June 6, 2005, the second S-Bahn platform in summer 2006. The two regional platforms were not moved. As part of the redesign of the railway systems, the line in the area of the Charlottenburg train station was provided with noise protection walls on both sides .
In 2010, the station building was energetically renovated as part of the Federal Republic of Germany's economic stimulus package , which reduced heating energy consumption by 41 percent. Between September 2012 and April 2013 the track troughs of the long-distance railway above the platform tunnel were renovated and replaced.
The German railway company intends to extend the Charlottenburg station to the "Future Station".
Investments
The station has a total of four central platforms . The two regional platforms are located to the west of Lewishamstrasse, which crosses the railway line . The two S-Bahn platforms were moved to the east in 2005, so that the pedestrian zone Wilmersdorfer Straße and the underground station of the same name on the U7 line can be reached by a short walk.
As one of 20 so-called main stations of the Berlin S-Bahn, the station is manned by local supervision. Since spring 2016, train handling has been carried out on the S-Bahn platforms by the driver using the driver's cab monitor (ZAT-FM).
Line overview
In addition to long-distance trains, the RE 2 regional express line also runs through the station without stopping. Two Regional Express, three regional trains and four S-Bahn lines currently stop at Charlottenburg station.
With the timetable change in December 2018, the station became a long-distance stop for a pair of trains again. The new pair of Nightjet trains 456/457 between Vienna and Berlin has its final or starting point at Charlottenburg station. In addition, a single IC 2078 has been ending in Berlin-Charlottenburg since 2019.
