Bancroft is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 68 people lived there on an area of ​​103.5 km². It is one of the most populous towns in the United States.

history

The area was organized as the Bancroft Plantation in 1840. It was named after the historian George Bancroft , whose brother lived here for some time. On February 5, 1889, the previous plantation was elevated to a town. In 1907, Bancroft gave land to Weston. The main source of income for the inhabitants of this area was forestry. The Maine Central Railroad , which opened up the southern part of Bancroft and operated a station, made it possible to transport the wood economically.

The road from Wytopitlock to Danforth and the Bangor – Vanceboro railway , which is still used as a freight service, run through the city. The last passenger train stopped at Bancroft station in 1954, and the VIA Rail's Atlantic ran through the station without stopping until the end of 1994 . The nearest airport with scheduled flights is in Presque Isle .
