Bancroft is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 68 people lived there on an area of 103.5 km². It is one of the most populous towns in the United States.

According to the United States Census Bureau , Bancroft has a total area of 106.16 km², of which 104.71 km² is land and 1.45 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Bancroft is in the far south of Aroostook County. The Mattawamkeag River flows through the area centrally in a southeast direction. The Lower Hot Brook Lake borders in the south . There are only smaller lakes in the town area. The surface of the town is flat, the highest point is the 184 m high Sherwood Mountain .

history
The area was organized as the Bancroft Plantation in 1840. It was named after the historian George Bancroft , whose brother lived here for some time. On February 5, 1889, the previous plantation was elevated to a town. In 1907, Bancroft gave land to Weston. The main source of income for the inhabitants of this area was forestry. The Maine Central Railroad , which opened up the southern part of Bancroft and operated a station, made it possible to transport the wood economically.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
The road from Wytopitlock to Danforth and the Bangor – Vanceboro railway , which is still used as a freight service, run through the city. The last passenger train stopped at Bancroft station in 1954, and the VIA Rail's Atlantic ran through the station without stopping until the end of 1994 . The nearest airport with scheduled flights is in Presque Isle .
Public facilities
Bancroft does not have its own library, hospital or other medical facility. The nearest hospital for the residents of the town is in Danforth.

Bancroft and Orient belong to the Maine School Administrative District # 70. The district includes Ashland Garfield Plantation, Masardis, Oxbow, Portage Lake and Sheridan.
