Bruno Deserti (born February 19, 1942 in Bologna , † May 25, 1965 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza ) was an Italian racing driver .

Career

Bruno Deserti began his racing career in 1959 at national rallies in Italy. At the beginning of the 1960s, he switched to the circuit and increasingly began to drive touring and sports car races . In 1963 he finished third in a national sports car race in Cesenatico and made his debut in 1964 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . Together with Roberto Bussinello , he was 13th overall in an Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ . Parallel to his sports car engagements, Deserti competed in races in the Italian Formula 3 championship . In this series he won the Coppa di FIA in Monza in December . In 1965, he entered the Sebring 12-hour race and the Monza 1000 km race when Enzo Ferrari invited him to do another test drive in Monza at the end of May. He made his debut for the Scuderia at the Targa Florio .

Death in Monza

Ferrari invited youngsters to the Scuderia factory drivers on the traditional Italian track to test the Ferrari 330P2 . In addition to the young drivers Andrea de Adamich , Giampiero Biscaldi and Deserti, the top piots John Surtees , Lorenzo Bandini , Ludovico Scarfiotti and Giancarlo Baghetti were in Monza. After a long day of testing, Deserti took over the P3 from de Adamich at 6:45 p.m. Although he was not entirely satisfied with his seating position, Ferrari racing director Eugenio Dragoni sent him out onto the track. On his eighth lap, Deserti had an accident on the Curva Grande. The Ferrari hit the grass with its right wheels and the driver lost control of the car at high speed. The car skidded over the guardrails and flew into the woods to the left of the track. The Ferrari hit a tree and immediately caught fire. Although rescue workers were quickly at the scene of the accident - Lorenzo Bandini ran 300 meters with a fire extinguisher to the scene of the accident - and the fire was extinguished quickly, any help came too late for Deserti. He had died when he hit the forest hard. Enzo Ferrari then left the racetrack prematurely because another young Italian had died in a Ferrari racing car.
