Video albums
- Viva Santana! (Editions on VHS / 1988, on DVD / 2006)
- Sacred Fire - concert recordings of the tour (editions on VHS and DVD, exact year of publication not known)
- Light Dance - songs by Santana accompanied by recordings of nature (meadow of flowers, beach, etc.) (Edition VHS / 1995 - only available in American VHS-NTSC format)
- Supernatural - two different concert recordings of the tour (editions on DVD / 2000)
- Santana Live in Concert at Royal Albert Hall 1971 - with Johnny Winter & Edgar Winter & Taj Mahal (musicians) (Edition DVD / 2001 - not part of the official Santana discography),
- Down Under - Live Australia - Concert 1979 in Melbourne (various covers - country-specific) (Edition on DVD / 2004)
- Santana Live by Request - for the concert tour All that I Am (Edition on DVD / 2005)
- as well as three different DVD editions for the jazz festivals in Montreux (see below)
- further individual songs known as video extracts (music or video clips) on a large number of enhanced CDs (extended single CDs) from the Supernatural album to today's albums.
Since there are no or insufficient or released music rights for many - especially older - Santana songs, there is already an unmanageably large number of compilation releases with a wide variety of covers and titles. Together with the large number of bootlegs , promotional recordings and radio shows (radio recordings on recordings), the official Santana discography is very difficult to follow. Well-managed sound carrier collections at Santana often run into the hundreds, especially since more and more special pressings are added, especially with the newer albums (e.g. the Supernatural album, of which also versions as double LP, vinyl & CD -Singles / Enhanced-Singles of almost all album songs, various concert DVDs, music clips, etc. were available).
In addition to these recordings, Carlos Santana can be heard on numerous other albums, both as a guest musician and as part of joint projects with other musicians, for example on
- José Feliciano : Escenas de Amor (1982) - (Samba pa ti in a Spanish vocal version)
- John Lee Hooker : The Healer (1989), Mr. Lucky (1991), Chill Out (1995)
- Alex Acuña : Same - Alex Acuña and the Unknows (1991)
- Paolo Rustichelli : Mystic Jazz (1991), Mystic Man (1996)
- Phish : A Phish Story (1992), Jammin 'Santana (1992) - released in 1992 by Phish due to a lack of a record deal
- Michael Jackson : Whatever Happens (2001)
- Babatunde Olatunji : Dance to the Beat of My Drum (1986)
Further publications of musical collaboration between Carlos Santana and various musicians were presented in 2005 with the lesser-known Santana album Playin 'with Carlos - with an Australian edition (1 CD / 15 tracks) and a Chinese edition (two CDs / 31 tracks ) gives. The titles on it (especially the first CD, the titles of which are less well known than those of the second) refer exclusively to the musical collaboration between Santana and other musicians.
He often played together with the musicians Eric Clapton and John McLaughlin - especially at live concerts. There were also guest appearances with many music colleagues who were friends, such as B. Billy Cobham , Stanley Clarke or Weather Report . Musicians such as José Feliciano, Gato Barbieri and Ottmar Liebert refined the better-known Santana ballads Europe and Samba pa ti . Among other things, guest appearances by Gato Barbieri and José Feliciano at various Santana live concerts became known.
Carlos Santana could already be heard at the 1968 Michael Bloomfield & Al Kooper Fillmore West concert and the Live Adventures album recorded there (1969) - months before the Woodstock Festival and the release of the first Santana album Same - Santana (1969 ).
In 1978 an album called Giants appeared on the market (in different covers - country-specific), which was recorded by Carlos Santana, some band members and musician friends such as Herbie Hancock , Greg Errico , Lee Oskar and others. This lesser known album is not part of Santana’s official discography.
The limited edition album Food for Thought (2004), which was distributed exclusively through a Mexican restaurant chain and the Santana fan club, is also little known .
Band members from Santana also devoted themselves to collaborative solo projects, such as B. the album projects ROAR (1985) and Abraxas Pool (1997) - the latter was in turn recorded by frustrated band members during the Santana creative crisis in the second half of the 1990s. During this solo project one also remembered the instrumental ballard Szabo , once composed by Neal Schon and Michael Shrieve for Santana , which had already been forgotten because of other preferred ballad-like songs. A piece that reflects the typical Santana sound and makes its global success.
In the course of time there have been repeated solo projects of individual or group members (such as solo releases by Gregg Rolie , Alex Ligertwood , Tom Coster , Greg Walker and others - with or without Carlos' support) . Some former band members also founded new successful bands out of their Santana formation time, as can be seen from the example of the band Journey , founded by Gregg Rolie & Neal Schon .
Since the overwhelming Grammy Awards success of 1999 with the album Supernatural , Carlos relied more and more on guest musicians in the vocal field in his subsequent album projects . In addition to the many guest musicians on the previous albums, the voice of the opera star Placido Domingo in the song Novus , released in 2002 with the album Shaman , stands out.
At the 38th Montreux Jazz Festival in 2004, Carlos Santana performed three concerts on the same evening with some of his favorite blues artists Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Bobby Parker and Buddy Guy. He has performed with his respective band members and / or with many other musicians since 1971 at the Jazz Festival that has been taking place there every year since 1967.
In 2005 another album (& DVD) was released, which had already been recorded at the Jazz Festival in Montreux in 1988 together with Wayne Shorter and the band members of Santana & Shorter. Two years later (2007) a double DVD of the 38th Montreux Jazz Festival in 2004 was released under the title Hymns for Peace , together with other guest musicians (such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea , Stevie Winwood , Patti Austin , Ravi Coltrane and others) as on the first mentioned Blues-3-DVD-Box Carlos Santana presents Blues at Mountreux 2004
Carlos Santana didn't just record his own music. Since 1993 he has also participated in the compilation of samplers (so-called compilations ) by other musicians. On his recommendation, a sampler series Sacred Sources 1 - Live Forever began in 1993 (under Guts & Grace Records / Polydor) , based on music by Jimi Hendrix , Marvin Gaye , Bob Marley , Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Coltrane von is introduced to him. Further samplers in this series have been announced.
