Corfinio is a municipality with 1012 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian Abruzzo north of Sulmona . In ancient times the place was called Corfinium . The village lies within the Majella National Park .

history

The ancient Corfinium was a place of Marsian Paeligni in the valley of Aternus . In the alliance war against Rome it was the capital of the Italians and was renamed Italica or Italia . When the Italian allies were granted Roman citizenship after the end of the war , Corfinium became a municipality belonging to the Tribus Sergia. At the beginning of the civil war in 49 BC BC Corfinium was a base of the Senate Party, which was conquered by Gaius Iulius Caesar , where he pardoned his captured opponents. During the imperial era, Corfinium belonged to the 4th region and was located at the intersection of the Via Valeria and the Via Claudia Nova .

The modern place is north of the ancient city.

Basilica of San Pelino

San Pelino

The most important work of art of the place is the 'Basilica Valvense' or San Pelino, one of the cathedrals of the diocese of Valva . The first construction of the church was made in 1104–1124. There was a fire in 1229. The oldest part still preserved today is the wing of the so-called Oratory S. Alessandro, which protrudes obliquely in the middle of the right flank, the tower of which was built at the beginning of the 12th century. The transom windows on the apse sides are remarkable . They were still walled up until the restoration in 1917. The pulpit is very similar to that of San Clemente a Casauria . The rarely found capitals at the corners, which usually held candles, are also preserved here.

Viticulture

In the municipality of vines are varieties Montepulciano for the DOC - wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grown.
