Division 1 1961/62

The Division 1 1962-63 was the 25th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the second time after 1961 , the AS Monaco .

The first game day was August 19, 1962, the last day was May 25, 1963. There was only a “winter break” over Christmas and New Year's Eve.

societies

The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than in 16th place were eligible to participate, as well as four promoted teams from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; In the case of a tie, the goal quotient was no longer the decisive factor for the placement , but the goal difference .

While the teams from Reims, Nîmes and RC Paris, which were highly regarded before the start of the season, did not play a significant role - even the defending champions who ended up second in the end were never at the top - two teams surprised the experts: the promoted Bordeaux, an eleven practically without stars, owned them best defense in the league and was almost invincible, especially away from home (only three defeats, the first of which only on matchday 27). And Sedan-Torcy developed a run, as a result of which the Ardennes topped the table with five points ahead of Bordeaux and Monaco at the end of January. The future champions only replaced her there in March after the Monegasque got off to an extremely bad start into the season (only one win in the first eight games), but then rolled up the field from behind. In the end, the ASM not only won the championship, but also the national cup and thus, as the sixth club since the introduction of professionalism (1932) , even the doublé .

In the relegation zone, Marseille, Montpellier and Nancy were three “long-established” clubs in the top division that were left behind, and Grenoble, a club that would only play first-class again in the 21st century. In their place came the following season two promoted players ( AS Saint-Étienne and FC Nantes ), who should dominate the reduced to 18 participants (a) Division 1 for nearly two decades. The headlines were also made by the unexpected dismissal of three coaches who had been particularly successful in recent years : Albert Batteux at Reims, Pierre Pibarot at Racing Paris and Lucien Leduc at Meister Monaco learned that their services were no longer desired.

(a)The association felt compelled to make this reduction after three second division clubs ( CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , CA Paris and AS Troyes-Savinienne ) voluntarily returned to the amateur camp at the end of the season.
