The Division 1 1965-66 was the 28th staging of the professional French football league. The championship was for the second time FC Nantes , who defended their title from the previous year ; this had only succeeded once in the history of the league (Nice 1952 ).
The first game day was August 22, 1965, the last game day was June 11, 1966. There was a “winter break” from December 20 to January 7.
societies
The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 15th were eligible to participate , plus three direct promoters from the second division and the two winners of the relegation games , in which both first division members (Rouen, Nîmes) had been able to hold the class. Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north ( Racing Lens , US Valenciennes-Anzin , OSC Lille ),
- three from Paris and Champagne-Ardenne ( Stade Français , promoted Red Star Olympique , UA Sedan-Torcy ),
- two from the northeast ( Racing Strasbourg , FC Sochaux ),
- five from the west ( FC Rouen , Stade Rennes UC , defending champions FC Nantes , SCO Angers , Girondins Bordeaux ),
- seven from the south ( AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , Toulouse FC , Olympique Nîmes , AS Monaco and the two newly promoted AS Cannes , OGC Nice ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.
Nantes before Bordeaux and Valenciennes was the same entry as in 1964/65, but there were significant differences to the previous season. Because Nantes had almost a start-to-finish victory this time, and with their 2-1 victory at the Girondins in September, the title race was as good as decided for the media. In fact, the Canaris expanded their lead even further, remained unbeaten at home - with only two minus points at the Stade Marcel-Saupin - and only lost four matches. The two opponents had the same number of goals scored and captured, but Nantes had scored seven points more than the Girondins, and the game concepts could hardly be more different: while Bordeaux's Catalan coach Artigas relied on a defensive system related to the Catenaccio - vividly called Béton in France - his Basque colleague Arribas gave the players a lot of freedom in a basically very offensive concept. There was only one downer for Nantes this season: when the Canaris scored their sixth goal on the last day of the match in Cannes, Éon celebrated it with a jump of joy - and tore off his Achilles tendon , which cost the goalkeeper participation in the World Cup finals .
At the bottom of the table in Division 1 , two of the previous year's climbers (Red Star, Cannes) were already identified as direct relegators; both had remained without a single away win. The decision as to who would still have to fight for relegation in the subsequent barrages was much tighter : Stade Français and Lyon only saved the wafer-thinly better goal difference. However, Nîmes and Lille then prevailed against their second division opponents. For the following season , much to the delight of many fans, the club cashiers and the specialist media, two "greats of French football" returned to the top division with Stade Reims and Olympique Marseille .
