The Divizia A 1989/90 was the 52nd season in the history of the Romanian football league Divizia A. It started on August 23, 1989 and ended on June 7, 1990 . The game was closed from mid-December to the end of February ( winter break ).

The 18 teams played against each other twice on 34 match days. The three last-place teams went into the Divizia B from. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams were tied at the end of the season, the direct comparison decided that season .

After the fall of the communist government of Romania around the turn of the year 1989/90, FC Olt Scorniceşti from the hometown of Nicolae Ceauşescu and AS Victoria Bucharest as a football club of the Bucharest police were excluded because of rule violations in recent years. All games in the second half of the season were rated as lost 3-0.
On September 9, 1989 Steaua Bucharest lost 3-0 against Dinamo Bucharest for the first time since June 18, 1986 (4: 5 at Universitatea Craiova ) again a game in Divizia A and ended a series of 104 unbeaten games in a row. The series of 63 unbeaten away games did not end until April 18, 1990 against Universitatea Craiova.
