FIPS 10
FIPS 10 is the name of the US Federal Information Processing Standard No. 10 "Countries, Dependencies, Areas of Special Sovereignty, and Their Principal Administrative Divisions" (US Federal Standard 10 for Information Processing "Countries, Dependent Territories, Areas with Sovereign Characteristics, and Their Main Administrative Assignment").
The standard is important in the electronic databases of the USA , especially in the military and government organizations with external impact. Standard identifiers and abbreviations for countries and their subnational entities around the world are introduced here. These identifiers and abbreviations are regularly not identical to the ISO country codes and names of the UN.
This can be shown well with the digraphs of the country codes. The ISO country codes are based on the names of the states, e.g. B. ES (España) or DE (Germany), while the FIPS 10 names are mostly based on the common US names, e.g. B. SP (Spain) or GM (Germany). Appendix 4 of this standard contains the specifications for sub-national administrative areas.
Responsibility for maintaining this list was transferred from the United States Department of State to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) in 1997 , but the names of the states are determined by the United States Board on Geographic Names .

Taiwan is therefore claimed by the People's Republic of China and the authorities on Taiwan; the island is administered by the authorities in Taiwan.
