Film Festival Max Ophüls Prize 2021
The 42nd Max Ophüls Preis (FFMOP) film festival took place from January 17 to 24, 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the most important newcomer film festival for Germany , Austria and Switzerland was not organized in cinemas in Saarbrücken , as usual , but rather as an online edition. The documentary A Black Jesus by Luca Lucchesi , which was produced by this year's honorary prize winner Wim Wenders , was selected as the opening film .
Compared to the previous year, a slightly tighter range of 98 long and short films was presented in 47 programs, including 50 German premieres in the competition categories of feature film (winner: Borga by York-Fabian Raabe ), documentary film (winner of Stollen by Laura Reichwald ), medium length Film (Prize winner: Tala'vision by Murad Abu Eisheh ) and short film (Prize winner: Fish by Raphaela Schmid ). For this purpose, a streaming platform specially developed for the festival was used, on which all films within Germany could be streamed for a fee from January 18 to 24. A limited number of viewings was possible for each film program, which was based on the maximum capacity of a physical festival.
From January 10 to 17, 2021, the main focus and highlights of the film program were presented on the streaming platform during the Blue Week (formerly Blue Hour ). In addition, from January 18th to 22nd, the MOP festival radio was presented on the platform free of charge and without registration in cooperation with Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR). The web channel provided information about program tips, background information, short films, music videos and SR talks with filmmakers.
