The Floridsdorfer Athletiksport-Club (FAC) is a soccer club from the 21st Viennese district of Floridsdorf . The Austrian soccer champions from 1918 have been playing in the second division since the 2014/15 season . His club colors are blue and white. The professional football department is outsourced to FAC Wien GmbH , of which the club is the sole shareholder.
history
Founding and winning the championship in 1918
The Floridsdorfer AC was founded in August 1904 and became the 20th association in the Vienna Association. The games were initially played on Birnerplatz. On October 14, 1906, a new course was opened at the Nordbahnbrücke with a game against SK Slovan Wien in front of 1,000 spectators. SC Hakoah Vienna took over the old place . The team was still unbalanced, losing most of their games at the beginning. In the newly introduced Austrian championship, which was initially limited to Viennese teams, FAC reached 7th place in the first season of 1911/12 . Also in the following years the Floridsdorfer were mostly to be found in the lower half of the table.
The rise of Floridsdorfer AC finally began at the time of the First World War . In 1915 they won the Austrian Cup for the first time with a 3-1 win against SK Admira Wien , but this success is not officially recognized. Both in 1916 and 1917 they achieved the runner-up title and only had to admit defeat to Rapid Vienna with two points each. In the 1917/18 season , however, the Floridsdorfer AC was able to turn the picture around. Thanks to a better goal difference, they became Austrian football champions for the first time, but also for the last time, ahead of Rapid. The Floridsdorfer AC even managed to win the double . In the final game of the cup, the Floridsdorf team won 4: 3 against the Viennese amateur sports club . The game should have taken place a week earlier, however, and both teams agreed, without obtaining the consent of the association, to postpone the match due to the heavy rain. The Austrian Football Association ruled out the recognition of the game as a cup final game in advance and also refused to hand over the cup to the winner.
Between the wars and the Second World War
After the First World War, the Floridsdorfer AC could no longer follow up on the earlier successes. Above all, injuries plagued the club, which finally found itself in a relegation zone in 1923 after a few mediocre seasons. However, this descent was somewhat unfortunate. The number of clubs in the first division was reduced from 13 to 12, so that now the eleventh - in this case the Floridsdorfer AC - had to relegate to second class. In addition, it came that the club protested against the valuation of the tenth in the table, Wiener AF , because this had illegally used players suspended in several games. The Floridsdorfer AC was right, but by this time he was already playing in the 2nd class. As a small consolation, the club was still allowed to call itself "first class".
In the 2nd class North, the Floridsdorfers were first one point behind the Vienna AC runner-up, a year later, in 1925, they were champions and returned to the Vienna league. In the following years they held themselves successfully in the top Austrian league, but never got beyond fifth place in the table. In 1933, the Floridsdorfer AC took over the old Admira square in Deublergasse. The greatest success in this period was the participation in the international Mitropacup , the forerunner of the European Cup, where they were eliminated in the first round with a total score of 1:10 against Ferencváros Budapest . In the 1938 season, the Floridsdorfer AC only reached 8th place and had to relegate, as the introduction of an Austrian league that year meant that four Viennese clubs had to relegate in favor of the new clubs from the federal states .
Fight to stay in the first division
At the time of the Second World War , however, the Floridsdorfer AC regained strength. Through a merger with the district rivals SV Amateure Fiat Wien , the club rose again in 1940 to the highest Austrian league, the Gauliga at that time. In addition, there was a war-related syndicate with FC Stadlau from 1940 to 1945 . Here the club played again for the title and was even runner-up behind Vienna in 1943/44 . After the end of the Second World War, the Floridsdorfer played against relegation for almost ten years. The club had to let good players like Robert Dienst , who would later score 307 goals in the championship for Rapid, go. In 1954 one was finally clearly the last of the state league A and was relegated to the state league B. At first they missed the promotion relatively narrowly with the fourth place, in the next season, however, the Floridsdorfer AC rose even from the State League B.
Relegation and many mergers
After the Floridsdorfer had become champions of the third-class Viennese city league in 1959, they went straight down again in 1960 as bottom of the table. In 1966 the club found a new home on the old Admira-Platz in Hopfengasse, but there were no major sporting successes. In 1967 the club played for the last time in a second-rate league, but had no chance. They stayed in the third division regional league in the 1970s . In 1980 they missed the championship title and promotion to the 2nd division of the Bundesliga only because of the worse goal difference against SC Neusiedl am See . In the meantime, the Floridsdorfer AC even had to accept relegation to fourth division.
In 1990 the club merged with SV Groß Viktoria to form FAC Viktoria Wien and rose in the 1996/97 season with the championship title of the Vienna City League in the Regionalliga Ost. After winning the title, the merger with Viktoria was resolved in the summer of 1997. In three consecutive seasons (2001 to 2003) the Floridsdorf AC was runner-up in the Regionalliga Ost. In 2004 came the relegation to the Vienna City League and the merger with the FK Old Formation-RAG Feibra (founded 1985). In the 2006/07 season the club played as FAC-OFR in the Vienna City League.
On June 18, 2007, the club decided to merge with the PSV team for Vienna from the 2007/08 season . Since then, the association has appeared under the name FAC Team for Vienna . In 2014 the part of the name Team for Vienna was deleted from the club name.
Promotion and current situation
After the merger, promotion to the first division in second place was just missed in the 2007/08 season . In the 2008/09 season, the club finished ninth. In 2014 the FAC was champion of the Regionalliga Ost and played in the relegation against SV Austria Salzburg , the champions of the Regionalliga West, for promotion to the First League, and surprisingly prevailed 3-0 away after defeating himself had separated 2-2 in the home game. With this, the FAC returned to the second-class professional league in Austria after 47 years under coach Hans Kleer . The 2014/15 season was mixed and the club was at the bottom of the table for the entire season. In April 2015, the FAC finally separated from coach Kleer, who was replaced by Peter Pacult . He just managed to stay in league, but had to go in September 2015 after a catastrophic start to the season 2015/16 with 10 defeats in the first 10 games of the season and the cup-out against national division club FC Lankowitz . He was replaced on an interim basis by Thomas Flögel . He was followed by Jürgen Halper , who had been a junior trainer at FAC since September 2011. At the end of the season, the FAC finished last with only 17 points from 36 games and would have been relegated. However, since the league competitor SV Austria Salzburg had to relegate to the regional league due to financial problems and the relegated from the Bundesliga ( SV Grödig ) had not applied for a license for professional operation, the FAC was able to remain in the first division in the 2016/17 season . For the 2017/18 season, Thomas Eidler took over the team at FAC Vienna as the new head coach. Despite a weak start to the season, the team overwintered with a five-point lead over bottom of the table, FC Blau-Weiß Linz . Shortly after the start of the spring season, Thomas Eidler announced his resignation to take on a role at the ÖFB . Mario Handl , coach of the FAC amateurs and assistant coach of the fighting team, took over until the end of the season. The highlight of a good second half of the season was the 2-0 away win at FC Wacker Innsbruck on the last match day. It was the first victory of a FAC team at the Tyrolean Tivoli in the club's history, which brought the FAC ninth place at the end of the season. Due to the league reform, relegation in the 2017/18 season would not have been possible anyway. Before the end of the season, the FAC presented Oliver Oberhammer, the new head coach for the 2018/19 season. After a coach change in the 2018/19 winter break, Andreas Heraf acted as head coach of FAC Vienna, but the Viennese and FAC already separated by mutual agreement in May 2019. After a few games as interim coach, in which the tenth place in the table in the new sixteen league could be fixed, Mario Handl was confirmed as head coach for the 2019/20 season. Alexandar Gizow, who also acted as head coach of the FAC amateurs, has been available as his assistant coach since the beginning of the 2019/20 season. In May 2020, the FAC separated from trainer Mario Handl by mutual agreement. Since then, the team has been led by an interim coaching duo, consisting of the previous assistant coach Alexandar Gizow and sports manager Lukas Fischer.
