The Football League Third Division 1966/67 was the 40th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . The third division champions were the Queens Park Rangers and also the second-placed Middlesbrough FC rose to the Football League Second Division . For the two promoted teams in the following third division season 1967/68, the two second division teams Northampton Town and FC Bury, ranked in the table below, took the places. Swansea Town , Darlington FC , Doncaster Rovers and AFC Workington had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions Stockport County and the FC Southport , AFC Barrow and Tranmere Rovers placed behind them took the vacant positions in the following season 1967/68 .
