Herbert Weissbach

Herbert Weißbach (born November 12, 1901 in Bernburg (Saale) ; † October 13, 1995 in Berlin ) was a German actor , cabaret artist , radio play and voice actor .

Life

The son of a senior engineer initially took private acting lessons and then spent his time as a volunteer at the Altenburg State Theater . In 1921 he made his stage debut at the Schauspielhaus Leipzig as Chevalier Damartin in Rudolf Presber's Liselotte von der Pfalz . Stage engagements in Leipzig, Dresden, Mannheim, Berlin (including Hebbel am Ufer ) and at the Millowitsch Theater in Cologne followed. In addition, he worked as a freelance actor on various stages under the direction of Rudolf Noelte .

Together with Richard Tauber , the trained operetta singer Weißbach also gave guest appearances in The Hague, Amsterdam, London and Paris. He also took part in cabaret programs from 1934 (for example Ulenspiegel ).

Weissbach made his film debut in 1935 in Géza from Bolváry's drama Stradivari . In his almost 60-year career, Weißbach appeared in over 170 film and television productions in a wide variety of genres. He mostly played funny and quirky characters. He played in Reinhold Schünzel's Amphitryon - Luck Comes Out of the Clouds (1935), alongside Heinrich George in Casilla's sensational trial (1939), in Helmut Käutner's drama Romance in Moll (1943), in Robert A. Stemmle's post-war comedy Berliner Ballade (1948), in Slatan Dudow's drama Our Daily Bread ( DEFA , 1949), alongside Hans Albers in The Great Bomberg (1957), in Kurt Hoffmann's Dürrenmatt film Die Ehe des Herr Mississippi (1961), in Harald Reinl's science fiction thriller Im Stahlnetz des Dr. Mabuse (1961), in the Günter Grass film adaptation of Katz und Maus (1967), in Otto Waalkes ' Otto - The Film (1985) and directed by Andrzej Wajda in Rolf Hochhuth's Eine Liebe in Deutschland (1983). In 1987 he was awarded the Gold Film Ribbon for his services to the film .

Weissbach was also a frequent guest in television productions. He worked in films in the series Stahlnetz and The Despicable One as well as in series such as Derrick , Tatort and The Fast Gerdi . Even at the ripe old age of over 90, he regularly played character roles in television series such as Der Landarzt , Lindenstraße and Praxis Bülowbogen or in the Christmas series Ron and Tanja .

In addition, Weißbach worked extensively as a voice actor since 1937 and lent his distinctive voice to Lew Ayres ( The Battle for the Planet of the Apes ), Joe E. Brown ( A total, totally crazy world ), Will Geer ( Storm over Washington ) , Wilfrid, among others Hyde-White ( Battlestar Galactica ) , Spike Milligan (Three Foreign Legionnaires) and the dwarf sleepyhead (in the original: Pinto Colvig ) in the Disney cartoon classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (German version from 1966). He has appeared in numerous radio plays (including in the Professor van Dusen series )
