The Gersprenz is a 51.3 km, with the main source load Mergbach 62.1 km long, arising in the Odenwald , southwest and orographically left tributary of the Main in Hesse and Bavaria ( Germany ). It is a second order body of water  and is not navigable .

geography

course

The Gersprenz running in the Odenwald arises southwest of the Reichelsheim district of Bockenrod at an altitude of about 200  m above sea level. NHN through the confluence of the Mergbach and Osterbach rivers . Since the Mergbach is the main source river, its source at the Neunkircher Höhe ( 605  m ) in the Vorderen Odenwald is known as the Gersprenzquelle ( Mergbach source for a short time in 2013 ); it is designated as a natural monument Gersprenzquelle .

The Gersprenz initially flows northwards, with its valley increasingly widening to the loess-rich Reinheimer hill country and then through the wide plain of the Dieburger Bucht , which is a western branch of the Hanau-Seligenstädter Basin ( Hanau Basin or Eastern Lower Maine Plain ). From the area of Groß -zimmer, the river divides into several arms, which served as mill canals and then in the urban area of Dieburg as city and castle moats .

North of Dieburg, the Gersprenz makes an arc to the northeast. From then on it flows through Münster to Babenhausen in the eastern part of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district , crossing the Bachgau to reach Bavaria .

The Gersprenz used to flow into the Main on the outskirts of Stockstadt . In old maps from the 17th century the river Gernspring (1695) and Gernspring were mentioned . Since 1970/1971, the Gersprenz has been diverted in front of the left- Main Main dike for a length of about 3 km - crossing under the Federal Motorway 3 - to the north-northwest to behind the Main barrage Kleinostheim . There - about 500 m before the Main bridge of the A 45  - it flows into the underwater of the barrage. The estuary is east of the Mainhausen Waldrandsiedlung , but it still belongs to the outer northern part of the Stockstadt am Main district. At this point, the state borders of Bavaria and Hesse meet the Main, which is from then on the border river. In total, only about 7 km of the Gersprenz run on Bavarian territory.

Reichelsheim-Bockenrod flood retention basin

Immediately above the confluence of the Steinbach and Gersprenz near Bockenrod is the Reichelsheim-Bockenrod flood retention basin . It was created from 2008 to 2010 to reduce floods . Its approximately 3 m high and 200 m long dam with a bridge on Neuhausstrasse has a reinforced concrete passage structure for the water of the Gersprenz. The sections of Gersprenz and Steinbach there were secured with hydraulic engineering. The trial site took place in February 2012. The normally dry basin with a 47.7 km² catchment area has around 100,000 m³ of storage space on an area of around 8 hectares.

Wersau / Groß-Bieberau flood retention basin

Between Wersau and Groß-Bieberau , a flood retention basin with a maximum storage capacity of 495,000 m³ was put into operation in 2003. The final impetus for the construction of this basin was the flood events in 1993 and especially on January 27, 1997, which caused major damage in the low-lying areas of the urban area of Groß-Bieberau. The catchment area covers 113.3 km². Due to the flat shape of the terrain there, a relatively large retention volume is achieved with a low water level. The flood area covers around 40 ha. The culvert structure in the dam is designed in such a way that a regular discharge of 27.5 m³ / s is guaranteed. The system can thus be operated uncontrolled. In the event of a flood, the resulting water pressure regulates the damming process automatically. In interaction with the other retention basins, protection against 50-year flood events is achieved.

Gersprenzquelle natural monument

The Gersprenz spring has been designated as a natural monument (ND) since 1952 . It is one of the most famous sources of the Odenwald and is considered to be the origin of one of the most important brooks in the low mountain range. The "Ordinance on the Protection of Natural Monuments in the Bergstrasse District" identifies the spring as a "Gersprenzquelle" natural monument due to its natural spring properties.

history

The historic Gernsprintz near Stockstadt

In Roman times, the use of the small river by towing or smaller boats can be proven. Finds such as a boat's hook in Groß-Bieberau indicate this use far into the valleys of the front Odenwald . Goods were able to reach the Roman capital Dieburg via the river . The Stockstadt fort was located near the confluence with the Main .

The Gersprenz was first mentioned in a document in 786 in the Lorsch Codex .

In 1827 the river was described in detail by the Duke of Hesse geometer Georg Wilhelm Justin Wagner in the "Statistics and Topography of the Landraths Bezirk Reinheim in the Grand Duchy of Hesse" from the source on the Neunkircher Höhe to the confluence at Stockstadt in the Main.

The Gersprenz was also described in other "statistics and topographies" from the years 1802, 1828 and 1840, as well as in a river map of the Rhine from 1712 and in a map of the Odenwald Club from 1900.

In measurement letters from 1900 and 1910, the name "Gersprenz" appears in the Winterkasten area , as well as in the official real estate cadastre.

Gersprenz Valley Railway

The name of the Gersprenz Valley Railway, which has since been closed, was derived from the Gersprenz . Through this railway line, the also disused Rodgaubahn (Dieburg – Groß-Zimmer – Reinheim) and the still operated Rhein-Main-Bahn (Darmstadt – Dieburg – Aschaffenburg) all places on the Gersprenz were connected with each other.
