action

The film picks up on a few years after Ice Age 3 - The dinosaurs are on the loose . Mannis and Ellie's daughter Peaches has grown into a teenage mammoth and only has eyes for the attractive young mammoth Ethan, who is adored by all mammoth girls. In order to look good in front of Ethan, Peaches denies her friendship with her actual best friend Louis, a molehead, and gets used to peculiarities like sleeping upside down on a branch like her mother Ellie, much to the displeasure of her father Manni. When Manni just interferes when Peaches and Ethan get closer, a father-daughter argument breaks out between Manni and Peaches. The Megalonyx Sid is looking forward to an unexpected, unplanned reunion with his family. Sid's parents are pleased, but they only have in mind to leave Sid's seemingly annoying, senile and headstrong grandmother behind. So it happens and Sid's parents move on when Sid and his grandma are briefly distracted.

Rat squirrel Scrat's hunt for his beloved acorn allows the animal to get to the center of the earth, where Scrat creates the individual continents with his clumsiness and causes severe continental shifts. Especially in the difference of opinion between Manni and Peaches, Manni, Diego, Sid and Sid's grandmother are separated from the rest of the herd and float out into the open sea on an ice floe, but Manni can call out to his family that everyone should meet at the bridge. A slow continental drift forces the remaining Ellie and Peaches, the opossums Crash and Eddie and the other animals of the valley, including Ethan and Louis, to leave their homes, and so they slowly steer towards the bridge as agreed. Meanwhile, Scrat finds a treasure map in a hollow acorn at the bottom of the sea and follows it.

Manni, Diego, Sid and Sid's grandmother drift on and on until they meet a gang of pirates, led by Gigantopithecus Captain Utan, who wants Manni, initially planned as prey, in his team. A fight ensues in which Captain Utan's huge floe splits. The saber-toothed tiger lady Shira, who actually belonged to Captain Utan's crew, is temporarily forced to join Manni, Diego and Sid. When the herd finally reaches land, Shira tries to flee, but Diego catches up with her. The herd is horrified to discover that Captain Utan has also already gone ashore and has already converted a new, huge ice floe into a ship. With the native Klippschliefern , who can only communicate with Sid, the herd can distract Captain Utan and cast off himself with Utan's ship. Shira decides to help the herd around Diego to escape with the ship, but remains behind and is called a traitor by Utan and treated accordingly. With a new, large ice floe and narwhals as a drive, Utan wants to reach their home in front of the herd to get revenge on Manni's family.

On the way home, Manni, Diego, Sid and his grandmother reach sirens on the high seas , who show them their innermost desires and offer them a perfect illusion of what they want most - with Diego, for example, getting closer to Shira and with Manni the reunion and reconciliation with his family. Only Manni can withstand the sirens because the illusion says something Ellie would never say, and so he manages to get the ship back on track. When they get home, Manni and the others are horrified to discover that not only has the bridge collapsed, but also that Captain Utan has arrived before them and is holding Ellie and Peaches prisoner to take revenge on Manni. Shira finally changes sides, joins Diego's herd and fights against Utan's crew. Not least thanks to the heroic appearance of little Louis, whom Peaches had denied for handsome Ethan, as well as the "pet" of Sid's grandmother, a huge whale , Captain Utan and his crew can be beaten, whereupon Peaches and the whole herd celebrate Louis as heroes . Captain Utan then reaches the sirens, falls for their illusions and falls victim to these mythical beings. The herd has lost their home, but they all go together to the island of the hyrax, on which they were briefly, and find their new, even more idyllic home there.

In the end, Scrat reaches the goal of his acorn treasure map and arrives at “Scratlantis”, where he meets speaking and extremely civilized conspecifics and there are more than enough acorns for everyone; Scrat has arrived in his personal, absolute paradise. Despite warnings from the other squirrels, Scrat's target is the acorn, which acts as an important plug. When Scrat lifts this acorn, he ultimately floods and destroys Scratlantis - creating the last, missing continent, North America.

development

The first details of the sequel were released on January 10, 2010 when The New York Times reported that Blue Sky Studios was working on a fourth film and was negotiating the cast. Fox confirmed on May 5, 2010 that Ice Age 4 - Fully Postponed would be released on July 13, 2012.

Peter Deseve (art director of the film) developed a number of animals for the film, but they were never used. For example, Sid was supposed to be riding a Hyracotherium , a giant squid, and a number of prehistoric sharks on the island when Sid's grandmother took a bath in the sea. Captain Utan was initially a bear, but Peter Deseve said that a monkey, thanks to the flexibility of the joints and the "four hands", was a much more suitable animal when he was e.g. B. swings through on the ship's rigging, this was changed in the film.

A poster for the film was released at the 2010 Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas. On December 19, 2010, 20th Century Fox released a first screenshot of the film.

Reviews

“Unlike the last part, whose fast-paced dinosaur action lacked childish charm, the multitude of bizarre characters in part 4 revives the magic of the first films. Conclusion: Turbulent deep sea adventure with a lot of humor and feeling. "

“'Ice Age 4' has too little story and too many characters, but more importantly, it's a lot of fun. The fourth part of the prehistoric saga is great family entertainment primarily because of its tried and tested mixture of ludicrous situational comedy and turbulent action. "

“The plot arouses associations with old European cultural assets, has its engine in the family and their reunification, touches on teenage-parent dynamics, generation problems and of course love. Nature and the pirates provide some spectacular action sequences, all of them impressive, animated with effective camera perspectives. The three-dimensionality is an attractive bonus, even if opportunities are missed in view of the young target audience, because the filmmakers avoid circus effects here too, like Sid avoiding self-reflection.
