The Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) ( International School for Advanced Studies ) is a state-run Italian graduate school and research institution in Trieste . SISSA focuses on mathematics , physics and neurosciences . There is a close cooperation with the International Center for Theoretical Physics, which is also located near Trieste, and the Trieste branch of the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and also with research institutions in the former province of Trieste and with various elite colleges and universities around the world.
history
After the earthquake in Friuli in 1976 , the Italian government decided, as part of the reconstruction work, to set up a higher education and research facility based on the model of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa . The Scuola di Perfezionamento in Fisica (Advanced School of Physics) , which had existed in Miramare near Trieste since 1964, was incorporated into SISSA, which was founded in 1978 . In 1997 the first issue of SISSA's scientific journal , the Journal of High Energy Physics, appeared . In 2010, SISSA moved into a new domicile, which is a renovated and converted former sanatorium in a park with a sea view between Trieste and Opicina . The new location is on the Trieste – Opicina railway line .
Since 1978, over 1200 students have completed their Ph.D. obtained, since 1993 more than 200 master’s degrees have been awarded (as of 2016).
organization
The SISSA is divided into the following departments or research areas :
- Astroparticle physics
- astrophysics
- Condensed matter
- Molecular and Statistical Biophysics
- Statistical Physics
- Theoretical particle physics
- Cognitive Neuroscience
- Neurobiology
- Functional and structural genomics
- Physics and chemistry of biological systems
- Applied Mathematics
- Geometry and Mathematical Physics
The Ph.D. courses in the above-mentioned departments are designed for three to four years. Around 70 new Ph.D. students are admitted each year. In addition, there is a so-called Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Natural and Humanistic Sciences , which among other things offers a master’s degree in “Scientific Communication”. Further Masters courses have been set up in collaboration with the Universities of Trieste and Trento .
