Karsten Thormaehlen: Exhibition Man of the Century, University of St. Gallen, 2008

Karsten Thormaehlen (* 1965 in Bad Kreuznach ) is a German photographer and creative director .

Life

After graduating from the Stefan-George-Gymnasium in Bingen am Rhein , training as a bank clerk and then doing community service , Thormaehlen began studying art history , philosophy and political science at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz in 1988 . After passing an artistic talent test, he switched to the communication design course at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences , which he graduated with honors in 1993 as a qualified designer .

He began his professional career as a graphic designer and freelance photographer for advertising agencies, after completing his studies as an art director and later creative director at an advertising agency with branches a. a. in Germany, France and the USA. In the mid-1990s he lived and worked in New York , where he developed and carried out advertising campaigns with well-known photographers.

Thormaehlen works for architecture offices, design and advertising agencies as well as for German and international companies and publishers. He also works as a lecturer, workshop and seminar leader and gives lectures at demography, gerontology and geriatrics congresses.

He is a member of the professional association of free photographers and film designers (BFF), Freelens and since 2015 appointed member of the German Society for Photography (DGPh). Karsten Thormaehlen lives and works in Wiesbaden and Frankfurt am Main .

Thormaehlen's artistic work includes a. a. with demographic and socio-cultural effects of aging societies. His photo portraits of centenarians have been published in several illustrated books and presented in exhibitions at home and abroad.

For the portrait collection Aging Gracefully - Portraits of People Over 100 he researched and visited around fifty over centenarians, including personalities such as the actor Lukas Ammann ( Count Yoster does the honors ), the French actress Gisèle Casadesus ( The Labyrinth of Words ), the painter Prof. KO Götz or the Norwegian organist Leif Solberg . Likewise, two 116-year-old women, the US American Susannah Mushatt Jones (1899–2016) and the Italian Emma Morano (1899–2017), both of whom were verifiably born before 1900 and were officially listed as the oldest living people in the world during their lifetime were. The book was published by Chronicle Books in 2017 , the German edition was published by Knesebeck Verlag under the title 100 years of happiness in life - wisdom, love, and laughter .

The Silver Heroes photo project , which portrays elderly athletes such as B. Heidi Biebl , Nick Bollettieri , Sir Chris Bonington , Jürgen Grabowski and Hans Herrmann combined in an illustrated book of the same name, was published as a photo series in Stern (edition 13/2010) and in 2013 was nominated by the Robert Bosch Foundation for the German Age Award. The World Health Organization (WHO) , together with Thormaehlen, produced a campaign against age discrimination for World Health Day 2012. A motif from this series was printed on the cover of GEO magazine (12/2012 issue).

In 2014, on behalf of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), the exhibition Active in the Future - 2730 Years in 16 Pictures , sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth , was created , which was also shown in several German cities.

The Japanese paper manufacturer Tokushu Tokai Paper and the supermarket chain COOP Sapporo conceived two exhibitions in Tokyo and Sapporo in 2015 with twenty portraits of over 100-year-old Japanese and German that Thormaehlen photographed in Sapporo and Berlin. The exhibitions, which were designed and implemented by the Hiromura Design Office agency , received numerous prizes, including an award at the ADC Global Awards in New York City .

On the occasion of the company's 100th anniversary, the Bielefeld fashion company Seidensticker, together with Karsten Thormaehlen, realized a testimonial campaign in 2018 with protagonists over a hundred years old. A total of eight women and men, all between 99 and 103 years old, from Kronberg , Berlin and Potsdam took part. The ad range met with wide media coverage. a. through contributions in the ZDF broadcasts 37 degrees and Volle Kanne .

Thormaehlen has been participating in the Artist in Residence program of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IREM) at the University of Zurich since 2017 . His work is represented in private and public collections, including a. in the Weltkulturen Museum Frankfurt , the Design Museum London , the Allianz-Kunstsammlung , the Agaplesion Bethesda Clinic Ulm , the Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IREM) of the University of Zurich or the Free University of Amsterdam .
