Kisljar ( Russian Кизляр ) is a district town with 48,984 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in southern Russia , part of the republic of Dagestan .

geography

Kisljar is located in southern Russia in the Terek Delta , not far from the Caspian Sea and only a few kilometers from the border with the Chechen Republic . The nearest town is Khassavyurt , 65 km south of Kisljar.

history

Kisljar was first mentioned in 1609. The construction of a fortress on the Caucasian Line in 1735 led to increased settlement, so that in 1785 Kisljar was elevated to the status of a city. In contrast to the rest of Dagestan, the population of the city and its surroundings consisted mainly of Russian Terek Cossacks . Even if their share has fallen sharply since the second half of the 20th century, ethnic Russians are still the largest population group in Kislyar.

Since the 19th century, Kisljar has emerged as the center of viticulture and spirits production. The city is known, among other things, for the Kisljarka , a pomace brandy .

During the First Chechen War , a group of Chechen rebels led by Salman Raduyev attacked the city in January 1996 . More than 200 people died.

In March 2010, there were two bomb attacks with twelve dead. In June 2011, two men were sentenced to life imprisonment as a result. A terrorist attack was committed in an Orthodox church on February 18, 2018. A man shot five women with a hunting rifle and injured four other victims. The terrorist organization “Islamic State” (IS) took responsibility for the crime.

Economy and Transport

In Kisljar there are electrotechnical companies and an extensive food industry . Kisljar is the place of origin of the classic Russian pomace brandy Kisljarka.

The Makhachkala - Astrakhan railway , built in 1942 and into which the Caucasus Railway (Rostov – Vladikavkaz – Grozny – Kisljar) flows, runs through Kisljar . The railway line was interrupted for a few days in autumn 1942 by individual German advance detachments and remote surveillance units , but they were quickly pushed back again and rail traffic was restored. This makes the railway line near Kisljar the most easterly point (a few kilometers from the coast of the Caspian Sea) to which German soldiers advanced in World War II .

culture and education

The city has a local museum as well as a medical and a technical university.
