List of ancient artists
This list is intended to collect the names of the ancient visual artists. Authors do not belong on this list. With some artists the name has been passed down, be it through literary sources or through signatures, but in most cases science has to make do with emergency names , since the artists mostly did not sign.
Artist is also a relative term. If sculptors were seen as artists even in ancient times, architects and painters were generally seen more as craftsmen. This was even more true of potters and vase painters. Vase painters even lagged behind the potters in terms of reputation. Ancient artists mostly come from Greece or the Hellenized East. There are only a few Roman artists who can be named, since such works were valued by the Romans, but were not desirable for a free Roman. Artist groups were first named in the manner of emergency names by modern research. Only rarely, as in the case of the pioneer group, are individual artists known by name.
The following list cannot and does not intend to be exhaustive in any way. For a comprehensive, if not exhaustive, list of all known artists of antiquity by name, see
- Rainer Vollkommer (Hrsg.): Künstlerlexikon der Antike Vol. 1–2. Munich, Saur, Leipzig 2001-04, ISBN 3-598-11412-5
Greek and Etruscan vase painters and potters can be found in the list of Greek potters and vase painters and are not listed again here. Due to their technical and stylistic closeness, this also includes the clazomenic sarcophagus painters .
