The List of Singles on the Billboard Charts (1949) is a complete list of songs that made it onto the US charts published by Billboard in the 1949 calendar year .
When setting up it should be noted that the A and B sides of a sound carrier could also be placed individually in the Billboard charts; in this case they are listed separately in this list. The information on the number of weeks and the best placement correspond to the timeframe of the respective calendar year and thus only represent partial statistics. This year a total of 210 songs were placed.
At the end of the 1940s, rhythm and blues began to rise in popular taste; In early June 1949, Billboard Magazine introduced a separate hit parade (chart) for this genre. This music is rooted in the south of the USA, it originated in the urban north. With popular figures in the genre such as Count Basie , Ray Charles , the Ink Spots and others, this music moved closer to the mainstream and received national attention from a multiracial audience. A little further from the center was the music of rural America, called Country, Country & Western or simply hillbilly music. The radio contributed a lot to the success of this genre; younger singers conquer a wide audience. Furthermore, the mainstream or traditional pop established itself with crossover artists. Singers like Louis Armstrong , Patti Page, and Tony Bennett would experience national popularity in the early 1950s.
