Historical background

Since the centralization of the Spanish state at the beginning of the 18th century, instead of the previously common Catalan, only Spanish (Castilian) was used as the official language in the Catalan-speaking areas , and Spanish place-names developed accordingly. For larger places, previously existing Spanish exonyms were often used as official place names; for smaller places, the Catalan place names were mostly retained in their spelling at the time and only partially spelled out in the course of time. As a result of the reform of the Catalan orthography by Pompeu Fabra at the beginning of the 20th century, further at least orthographic differences arose between the Catalan and the official Spanish place names, as the new spelling rules in the official toponymy, which was officially Spanish and not Catalan, were not taken into account .

During the period of the Second Spanish Republic 1931–1939, Catalan was used again as the official language in the then autonomous Catalonia for the first time in 200 years, and the official toponymy was changed to the Catalan place names in the form corresponding to the Catalan standard orthography. In the other Catalan-speaking areas, however, only Spanish remained the official language at that time.

Under the Franco dictatorship 1939–1976, the use of Catalan as the official language was again banned, and in the first years of the dictatorship any public use of this language was also prohibited. As a result, all the official Catalan place names used at the time of the Republic were replaced by the Castilian ones. In some cases, attempts were also made to castilize place names that sounded too Catalan.

After the transition in Spain , the restoration of the autonomy of Catalonia and the establishment of the new autonomous regions Balearic Islands , Valencia and Aragon in the course of 1977 to 1983, first in Catalonia, later also in the Balearic Islands and in the Catalan-speaking parts of Valencia and Aragon declared all Catalan place names back to official names. The autonomous regions are autonomous in their area through toponomics. In Catalonia and, more recently, in the Balearic Islands, only the Catalan place names are officially used today, whereas in the Valencia region, both name forms are mostly used. In the Catalan-speaking part of Aragon, only Spanish is the official language, but Catalan place names have been officially recognized in addition to Spanish.
