Martin Winter (born November 5, 1955 in Zerbst ; † February 21, 1988 in Magdeburg ) was a rower from the German Democratic Republic . In 1980 he won the Olympic gold medal in a double foursome.

Career

Martin Winter grew up in Güterglück . In 1969, Winter moved to SC Magdeburg , in 1972 he took third place in the double scull at the Spartakiade . In 1974 he reached second place in the single behind Wolfgang Hönig in the GDR championships in the adult class . At the GDR championship in 1975, Winter won in the single and then won bronze at the world championship behind Peter-Michael Kolbe from the Federal Republic of Germany and the Irishman Seán Drea .

The following year he drove to the 1976 Olympics in Montreal as a member of the quadruple , but missed the safe Olympic gold medal there due to appendicitis. For him, Karl-Heinz Bußert came on board, who for the next few years, together with Martin Winter, was part of the regular crew of the GDR double foursome. Martin Winter only competed in double sculls in 1979, otherwise he won gold in double sculls at the Olympic Games and World Championships from 1977 to 1982. In 1983 he lost with the double scull at the World Cup against the boat from the Federal Republic of Germany. This was the first defeat of the GDR double foursome since the boat class was included in the program of world championships in 1974. Martin Winter was awarded the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit in 1980 and gold in 1984.

After his active career, Martin Winter was a rowing trainer at SC Magdeburg. In 1988 he died as a result of an accident.
