Montlhéry is a French municipality with 7593 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Essonne in the region of Ile-de-France ; it belongs to the Arrondissement Palaiseau and is the administrative seat of the canton Longjumeau .
history
Montlhéry is - with its strategic location on the road from Paris to Orléans - best known for its castle, of which only one tower remains. The castle was built in the 11th century instead of a much simpler construction and was the scene of a number of disputes between the kings and the local lords of Montlhéry (see House of Montlhéry ) until Louis VI. razed the fortress in 1118.
On July 16, 1465, the battle of Montlhéry between King Louis XI took place here . and the Ligue du Bien public called nobility opposition.
Completely ruined by the wars of religion , the fortress was completely abandoned in 1562; In 1591, King Henry IV allowed the residents of Montlhéry to use the stones from the castle for their own purposes.
In the 19th century the remaining tower was used for various scientific experiments:
- In 1822, François Arago calculated the speed of sound : a cannon shot fired here was measured at the Villejuif observatory .
- In 1823, Claude Chappe set up a telegraph station on the Paris-Orléans route.
- On June 5, 1874, Alfred Cornu tried to measure the speed of light between the tower and the Paris observatory .
During the Second World War , Montlhéry was liberated on August 23, 1944 by units of the French 2nd Panzer Division , which was advancing towards Paris.

Car racing track
Although located on the soil of the municipalities of Linas and Saint-Germain-lès-Arpajon , the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry has been associated with Montlhéry since it was founded in 1924 by Alexandre Lamblin .
Community partnerships
A community partnership has existed with Stetten am kalten Markt in the Sigmaringen district in Baden-Württemberg since 1982 . In 2008, the “Place Stetten akM” was inaugurated in Montlhéry under Mayor Claude Pons (Montlhéry) and Mayor Gregor Hipp (Stetten am kalten Markt). A stone from the Heuberg military training area adorns the square.
