geography
The province of Ankara is located in the Central Anatolian highlands and is surrounded by forested mountains to the north and the dry plains of Konya to the south. The area is traversed by the river systems of the Kızılırmak and Sakarya and has several lakes. Half of the area is used for agriculture, while forests make up 28% and grasslands 10%. In the south of the province is the Tuz Gölü , one of the salty lakes in the world. The highest point in the province is Mount Işık at 2,051 meters. The climate is hot and dry in summer and rainy in spring and autumn. Winter is snowy and cold.
Administrative division
The province is divided into 25 İlçe , which resemble a district in terms of settlement in rural areas and a district in urban agglomerations. In 1984 the old municipality of Ankara was dissolved and a large city municipality (Ankara Büyükşehir Belediyesi) was established in its place. For this purpose, the old urban area was divided into several municipalities ( Belediye ) and with these and neighboring municipalities, the metropolitan municipality was formed. Successive was founding and dissolution of municipalities and transfers of village ( Koy ) organizations in Mahalle organizations a Einräumigkeit made by local government (by the Belediye) and state government (through the İlçe), the field of individual communities that with the result the state administrative district of the same name. Following an administrative reform in 2014, the metropolitan area covers the entire province. The municipal self-government organs at provincial level (İl Meclisi) were dissolved and their responsibilities were transferred to the administration of the metropolitan municipality. The province thus became a purely state administrative district.
