Real Betis Balompié , Real Betis for short or just Betis and generally known in German-speaking countries as Betis Sevilla , is a football club from the southern Spanish city of Seville , whose first team plays in the Primera División . The club colors are green and white.
The green and white club colors of Real Betis Balompié are based on the provincial colors of the Andalusia region . Betis fans and players are called “béticos”. The Estadio Benito Villamarín (60,720 seats, belongs to Betis and is located in the Heliópolis district ) can be found in the southern part of the city. In the Betis club crest there are two large “B” letters - these stand for Betis Balompié. The term balompié is equivalent to fútbol , i.e. football, in Spanish. A crown in the emblem sits enthroned above the two "B", which explains the last addition in the club name ( Real = royal). The city rivals Sevilla FC are considered to be the arch rivals of Real Betis and their direct encounter is known as Derbi sevillano .
history
History until 2009
The association was founded in 1907 by students of the technical school as Sevilla Balompié. In 1914, this club merged with Real Betis FC, which had emerged as a spin-off from Sevilla FC. The name Betis (Latin: Baetis ) is a holdover from Roman times. The Guadalquivir River that flows through the city of Seville was formerly called "Betis". In addition to the Real Betis Balompié football club, this old name is also honored by a street, Calle Betis , in Seville. The Calle Betis is located directly on the Guadalquivir and is one of the liveliest entertainment streets of the 720,000-inhabitant city in Andalusia, especially in the evening.
After Betis was stuck in the relegation battle until the penultimate match day in the 2005/06 season and the president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera was constantly faced with hostility from his own fans, he announced his resignation on June 30, 2006. "Don Manuel" was not accepted by the fans, even though it saved the club from ruin in 1992. The fans accused him of a number of criticisms. They disliked his "sole rule" and his despotic manner. Above all, the fact that he dismissed coach Llorenç Serra Ferrer , popular with the fans, after the bad 2005/06 season , angered the fans against Ruiz de Lopera. Serra Ferrer was the most successful Betis coach in history. In addition, despite injuries to numerous important players, they had played in the Champions League (third in the preliminary round) and in the UEFA Cup (failed in the second round). Another problem was that the president, who at the time bought Denílson for around 31.5 million euros, had been betting on cheap transfers over the last few seasons that did not meet Betis' requirements. From this point on, a clear turnaround in club policy can be seen, although a debt of around 55 million euros has not yet been paid off. In 2011, Betis Sevilla was behind with paying 22 million euros in gaming wages. The association filed for bankruptcy a year earlier and has been in bankruptcy proceedings ever since. According to newspaper reports, Betis had additional tax debts of 34 million euros in 2012.
Real Betis (since 2009)
After the 1-1 draw in the home game of the last match day of the 2008/09 season against Real Valladolid on May 31, 2009, the team had to start the road to the second division for the eleventh time after eight years of uninterrupted membership in the Primera División. As a result, there were a number of demonstrations against club and football association officials, including in connection with allegations of manipulation against Hércules Alicante .
At the end of the 2010/11 season, after reorganization in the club, first place and thus the return to the Primera División could be celebrated. After staying in the secured midfield there in the 2011/12 season, they achieved a very good result one season later when Betis qualified seventh for the UEFA Europa League . In the 2013/14 season Betis made it to the round of 16, in which they were unlucky enough to be eliminated from rivals Sevilla FC on penalties. In the domestic Primera División Betis rose as bottom of the table. After a season in the Segunda División , Betis rose directly back to the Primera División as first in the table .
For the first time in five years Betis Sevilla was able to qualify for the UEFA Europa League . This was preceded by 6th place in the 2017/18 season in the Primera Division .
