The sports club Viktoria 01 e. V. ( Viktoria Aschaffenburg for short ) is a traditional soccer club from Aschaffenburg and the most successful soccer club in the Bavarian Lower Main region . Despite Aschaffenburg's affiliation with Bavaria, the club belonged to the Hessian Football Association up to and including the 2011/12 season . In the 2012/13 season he switched to the Bavarian Football Association . After its long membership in the top German division, the Oberliga Süd , in the 1940s and 1950s, the club spent three seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1980s . The club was created in 1904 by merging FC Aschaffenburg, founded in 1901, and FC Viktoria Aschaffenburg, founded in 1902, and was henceforth called FC Viktoria 01 . Two years later the athletics department was added and the FC became SV Viktoria 01 .

Time until 1945

“FC Aschaffenburg” was founded on August 6, 1901, followed by “FC Viktoria Aschaffenburg” on April 12, 1902. The two clubs, which had existed independently of each other, joined the Association of South German Football Clubs in May 1902. On June 24, 1904, the two clubs merged to form "FC Viktoria Aschaffenburg". Since an athletics department was attached on June 3, 1906, the club has been called "SV Viktoria 01 Aschaffenburg". The sports grounds at Schönbusch , which are still in use today, were inaugurated on May 23, 1909.

In the years 1915 and 1916 Viktoria was District and Gaumeister. Due to the First World War , gaming operations were suspended until May 23, 1920. At the beginning of the 1920s, a hockey, boxing and fistball department were founded. In 1921 the association registered 1,271 members. In the 1932/33 season, the SVA Ostmainkreismeister was before Kickers Aschaffenburg, in the following two seasons champion of the Lower Franconia district class. From April 24, 1937 to July 19, 1939 there was a merger with "Reichsbahn Tuspo" under the name "Reichsbahn-Viktoria 01". The Gauliga , top division from 1933, was only achieved once until the end of the war, when Viktoria took on the Gauliga Südbayern, newly created for this season, from which they were immediately relegated in the 1942/43 season.

Early post-war years

The stadium at Schönbusch was damaged by bomb craters as a result of the war and was not used again until April 26, 1946. Nevertheless, football was played again beforehand, the first game after the war took place on June 11, 1945 against Hassia Dieburg . In 1946 Viktoria Aschaffenburg (as a Bavarian club) became a founding member of the Hessian Football Association and rose as group champion of the Landesliga-Ost after several playoffs as Hessen champion in the Oberliga Süd , the top German division at the time.

The heyday

From 1946 to 1960, the SVA was part of Germany's top division, Oberliga Süd , for ten seasons, with brief interruptions . Games against teams such as FC Bayern Munich , VfB Stuttgart and the club were played in front of up to 18,000 spectators in the Schönbusch stadium. In addition to Bayern, TSV 1860 Munich and Frankfurter Eintracht also had to be content with a place behind Viktoria at the end of the season in some seasons of those years. In the 1951/52 season no game was lost at home, the "Schönbusch" was impregnable for opposing teams. The SVA had its most successful season ever in the 1955/56 season, when it ended up in 5th place. The average attendance in the club's most successful year was around 8,000 spectators per game. With Staab and Heinz Budion they had two active players , with Ernst Lehner a former national player in their own ranks. In May 1960, Aschaffenburg rose from the Oberliga Süd due to a goal quotient that was only 2/100 worse, it was the last season in Germany's top division.

Many years in amateur football

After relegation, the SVA played in the Second Oberliga Süd for three years until the club was relegated to the Hesse amateur league, which was then the third highest league. Viktoria Aschaffenburg belonged to this league with two short interruptions - one season in the Landesliga Hessen (1964/65), one in the Regionalliga Süd (1970/71) - for a little over twenty years.

The second Bundesliga

As champions of the amateur league Hessen in the 1984/85 season, Viktoria was entitled to take part in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga with three other league champions from other federal states. Each of the teams had to play both home and away games against each of the other three. The two teams that were able to collect the most points after a total of 12 games rose to the second division. The SVA competed against SpVgg Bayreuth , FSV Salmrohr and SV Sandhausen . After six games that Viktoria had to play, the club was behind Bayreuth in second place and was therefore eligible for promotion. The two games against Bayreuth deserve special mention: At the home game, Aschaffenburg had to admit defeat 2-0 in front of almost 14,000 spectators. However, Viktoria clearly won the second leg in Bayreuth with 5-0 goals. This was followed by two seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga, which Viktoria finished 13th and 18th out of twenty teams. The 18th rank in 1987 meant relegation to the amateur league Hessen. Since the Viktoria, however, succeeded in the championship in the amateur league Hessen in the following season, she was again entitled to participate in a promotion round. In 1988, Aschaffenburg prevailed behind 1. FSV Mainz 05 in front of SpVgg Unterhaching and FV 1909 Weinheim and thus managed to get promoted back to the second division. But after only one more year in the second-highest German division, they were relegated to 18th place in the table next to their old opponents Bayreuth and Mainz. Aschaffenburg was again champion of the amateur league Hessen in the 1991/92 season, but could not prevail in the promotion round against SpVgg Unterhaching and SSV Reutlingen 05 .

DFB-Pokal season 1987/88

Viktoria reached the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal in the 1987/88 season, after defeating the Bundesliga leaders 1. FC Köln 1-0 in the second main round. In the last sixteen, they won an away win against their Oberliga colleagues KSV Hessen Kassel (1-0). In the quarter-finals you had to admit defeat to SV Werder Bremen 1: 3 on your own pitch.

Creeping decline

Sporting failure and mismanagement led the club to the verge of bankruptcy in the following years. Even today, the association still bears a lot of legacy problems, although it has succeeded in partially reducing the mountain of debt. After an interlude in the national league in 1993/94, an attempt was made at the end of the nineties to force promotion with a budget that was disproportionately high for the club. Although Aschaffenburg played in the top group of the Oberliga Hessen at this time, it could not prevail against the competition. Further financial problems and poorer final placements were the result. The economic and sporting crisis also resulted in falling audience interest; With each season, Aschaffenburg lost more supporters until games in the major league had to be played in front of less than 300 spectators. The low point was the renewed relegation to the Landesliga Südhessen in 2003. Although the direct rise was made, but the Victoria finished the season in the two following years as before in places in the lower half of the table.

The 2006/07 season ended after a convincing team performance with second place in the table. During the season, the club refrained from applying for the regional league in the coming season, as FSV Frankfurt was almost unattainable at the top of the Oberliga Hessen and they did not want to raise the cost of applying for the regional league license.

Before the 2007/08 season, the former national player Andreas Möller announced that he would train the club free of charge in order to begin his coaching career. His ambition and probably also his level of awareness helped Viktoria find new sponsors. The slightly improved economic situation, the well-known coach as well as the fight for one of the four promotion places of the Oberliga Hessen led to the fact that after a long time the audience at the Schönbusch stadium increased again. By reaching third place in the final table, Viktoria qualified for the regional league.

However, Andreas Möller announced at the end of the season that he would be moving to Kickers Offenbach as sports director . Since some important companies had become involved as sponsors, mainly because of Möller's prominence, the financial situation of the club for the coming season was unclear. As of June 13, 2008, the licensing by the DFB for the regional league was secured according to official information on the club's website. Ronald Borchers was signed as the new coach for the Regionalliga .

After the home game on matchday 30 on May 16, 2009, the club announced at the press conference that Viktoria would no longer be able to play in the regional league in the following season. Viktoria Aschaffenburg withdrew his team voluntarily and played in the fifth-class Hessenliga in the 2009/10 season .

insolvency

On November 17, 2009, the Presidium filed an application with the Aschaffenburg District Court to open insolvency proceedings due to overindebtedness. Nikolaus Ackermann, a lawyer from Aschaffenburg, was appointed insolvency administrator.

On June 30, 2010, Jürgen Roth, the responsible judge at the Aschaffenburg District Court, opened the proceedings. As a result, the club was downgraded to the Association League Hessen Süd , i.e. one class.
The creditors' meeting took place on August 4, 2010 at the Aschaffenburg District Court with a comparatively large number of participants. All 40 creditors present there agreed to the insolvency plan drawn up by Ackermann. With its acceptance, the basis for the continuation and restructuring of the association was created.

With the decision of the bankruptcy court of December 10, 2010, the insolvency proceedings over the assets of the association were repealed and the proceedings ended.

Change to the Bavarian Football Association

In the 2010/11 season he was promoted to the Hessen League again. For the 2012/13 season it was decided to transfer from the Hessian to the Bavarian Football Association, since 4th place in the Hessenliga 2011/12 was sufficient for qualification for the new Bavarian Regional League. In order to be accepted into the Regionalliga Südwest, you would have to have come first. The first season in the Regionalliga Bayern was finished in 15th place, which almost meant the direct relegation. In the 2013/14 season , Viktoria only finished 18th and penultimate place in the Bavarian regional league. She was relegated to the fifth-class Bayernliga , in which one competed in the northern relay in 2014/15 . With the sovereign win of the championship with 16 games without defeat and 12 wins in a row at the end of the season, Viktoria managed to gain direct promotion. In 2015/16 the class could not be held again; the club finished 15th in the end and had to admit defeat in the relegation games to remain in the Bavarian regional league of SpVgg Bayern Hof and TSV 1860 Rosenheim . In 2018 he returned to the Regionalliga Bayern as champions of the Bayernliga Nord.

Although Aschaffenburg is in Bavaria, Viktoria Aschaffenburg played continuously in Hessian leagues after 1945 and not in the respective divisions of Bavaria. This changed in summer 2012 when the club moved to the Bavarian Football Association . The youth teams of the founding member of the Hessian Football Association had already participated in games in Bavaria.

Fan scene

In 1984 the fan club “Schönbusch 1984” with around a dozen fans was founded. Together with the “counter front” that was created a short time later, it was active until the end of the eighties. After relegation from the second Bundesliga in 1989, the fan club "Frankenpower", founded in 1989, the year of relegation, was the only organized fan group of SV Viktoria until recently. “Frankenpower” consists of around fifteen active members. In addition to the "Heylands-Freunde Aschaffenburg", which has existed since July 1998, further fan groups were created or revived in the 2007/2008 season due to the growing number of spectators and the ambition to advance to the newly formed regional league: The fan clubs and fan groups "Ascheberger Jungs" , "Blue Boys" and the "Frika-Front" consist of around thirty to forty active supporters, with the number of participating spectators at home games or prestigious away games growing to up to 150 fans. The Aschaffenburg fan scene is considered peaceful and football-oriented. There is a friendship among fans of Borussia Fulda .

During the time as a second division team in the 1980s, there was also a friendship with the fans of Kickers Offenbach . Since the Offenbachers had to go through a sporting crisis at this time and the fans did not want to go to arch rivals Eintracht Frankfurt to see high-class football, they very often came to the home games of Viktoria. The resulting friendship diverged or fizzled out after the descent of the Viktoria and the rise of the Kickers.

Stadium newspaper

As early as the 1940s there was a stadium newspaper on Schönbusch called “The New Sports Program”. In the 1960s and 1970s, the "Schönbusch-Echo" with the subtitle "Club news of the sports club Viktoria 01 e. V. Aschaffenburg “next to football also about the sports of boxing and bowling that were offered at the time. The official stadium newspaper “Schönbusch Kurier”, published by the club and initiated by the “Förderkreis SV Viktoria”, has been published since 1982. The design and size varied over the years: In the past, the issues of the “Schönbusch Kurier” in greyscale printing were usually around 15 pages thick and contained the usual information about the current table position, team squad, upcoming game dates and a portrait of the visiting team. The financially strained situation of the club at the turn of the millennium did not allow it to publish a separate stadium newspaper for each home game. During this period there was a significantly reduced version of the "Schönbusch Kurier", which was also available for two consecutive home games. With the 2007/2008 season, in which the club has moved more into the focus of the local public after many years due to the commitment of Andy Möller and the ambition to move up to the newly formed regional league, the “Schönbusch Kurier” will be published in color , expanded to include snapshots of the audience from the previous game, caricatures of famous Titanic cartoonists and some pages with club history. A few old editions that were issued for prestigious games can occasionally be found in online auctions as collectibles.

Club songs

The club's official anthem is the song “Blue and White” produced by the “Förderkreis SV Viktoria” at the end of the 1980s, which was sung by the players of the second division team. It is often played in the stadium to get in the mood before the game or after winning games. The refrain "We are blue, we are white - we are Schönbusch Dynamite", which refers to the location of the stadium not far from the Schönbusch landscape park , can occasionally be heard from the ranks of the audience. The single record, which is still offered for sale today, also features the “Viktoria Fan-Polka” on the B-side, which, however, is far less popular than the title song.

Other departments

At the moment, only the club name “SV” reminds us that Viktoria Aschaffenburg was home to other sports in addition to football.

Boxing

In 1922 a boxing department was founded, which had temporarily separated from the main club, but was again part of Viktoria from 1960 to the early 1980s. The coach during this time was, among other things, the father of the Bundesliga coach Rudi Bommer . At the beginning of the eighties, the entire boxing department left the club to join TuS Leider .

Bowling

Viktoria's bowling department was established on March 18, 1975. Two bowling alleys, inaugurated on April 7, 1978, which were integrated under the clubhouse, soon served as the venue. A positive membership development - after just a few years the bowling department had over a hundred members - meant that the capacity of the club's own bowling alleys was no longer sufficient. This circumstance, as well as disagreements between the department management and the association's board, led to the separation of the bowling department in the early 1990s, which has since been active as an independent association under the name "KSV Viktoria Aschaffenburg". The no longer used bowling alleys in the basement of the clubhouse were converted into a fitness room in 2008.

tennis

On March 19, 1976 a tennis department was established. Hugo Schlett became the first department head. His successor on July 24, 1977 was Hans Hermann Wegbrod. From 1978 to 1980, a tennis facility consisting of seven tennis courts and a clubhouse was built right next to the training grounds for the football department and the clubhouse. With the establishment of the “TC Viktoria Schönbusch e. V. ”left the SVA's tennis department in 1993. Since October 26, 2001, the former tennis department has been part of the merger with the “TC Bayern Aschaffenburg e. V. "under the name" TC Schönbusch Aschaffenburg e. V. “in appearance. The last head of the tennis department under the Viktoria roof was Heinz Stenger from October 26, 1979.

Ladies gymnastics

With the support of the then club directors Horst Schmidt and Heinz Stenger, it was decided in October 1976 to create a women's gymnastics department. When the department was first presented to the general assembly in the spring of 1977, Renate Rothenbücher was elected as the first department head. Due to the lack of general meetings of the association, it is not clear whether the women's gymnastics department is still active.
