The Lichtenberg transmitter is a broadcasting system of ORS Österreichische Rundfunksender GmbH for radio and TV that went into operation on November 17, 1960 on the Lichtenberg near Linz . The internal name is: LINZ1
Transmission mast
The Lichtenberg transmitter uses a 95-ton, 155-meter-high guyed tubular steel mast as antenna carrier , the diameter of which is 1.9 meters in the lower area and 1.2 meters in the upper area. With the help of an internal elevator, the inside of the mast can be accessed up to a height of 80 meters. In August 1964 the mast was raised from 135 meters to 155.7 meters in order to create the conditions for the broadcast of the second television program, which was first broadcast on December 4, 1964. The station currently broadcasts eight VHF programs, 5 DVB-T2 television packages and 1 DAB + radio package. Originally, instead of the guyed tubular steel mast, a transmission tower with a view was to be built, but the necessary financial resources were not available from the ORF, the state of Upper Austria and the city of Linz. On November 17, 1960, the transmitter went into operation after a two-year construction period.
On October 18, 2012, the old, 17-meter-high GRP cylinder attachment used since 1979 was replaced by a new attachment of the same height, as it had reached the end of its technical useful life.
The transmitter is the landmark of the municipality of Lichtenberg and also part of the coat of arms. The area on which the transmitter is located was only incorporated on January 1, 1953. The Breitenstein in the municipality of Kirchschlag near Linz was also considered as an alternative location for a transmitter . State planning and nature conservation had taken a stand against the project in Lichtenberg before it was finally negotiated on June 24, 1958.
Transmission area
Due to its good location, the Lichtenberg transmitter has a large coverage area. You can receive it on Bavarian soil in Lower Bavaria , the eastern parts of Upper Bavaria as well as in the south-eastern parts of the Bavarian administrative district of Upper Palatinate. In addition, the station can be received far into the Upper Austrian and Salzburg Alps . At the northern dam of the Salzburg Limestone Alps, but also the Bavarian Limestone Alps , there are areas in which the Lichtenberg transmitter sends a better and therefore more intense signal than, for example, the Gaisberg transmitter in the greater Salzburg area .
The Lichtenberg transmitter also covers parts of Styria and the western parts of the federal state of Lower Austria . For example, about 30 km west of Vienna on the West Autobahn, the ORF frequencies from Ö1 , Radio Upper Austria and Ö3 , FM4 and Life Radio can sometimes even be received with RDS . In the Danube valley between Engelhartszell on the Danube and Grein , it can be described as “the central station”. It also radiates far into the Bohemian Plain in the Czech Republic . On the Schneekoppe in the Giant Mountains in the Polish-Czech border area, the transmitter can also be received as overreach .
