Shōma Uno ( Japanese 宇 野 昌 磨 , Uno Shōma ; born December 17, 1997 in Nagoya , Aichi Prefecture ) is a Japanese figure skater who starts in a single run . He became a silver medalist at the 2018 Olympic Games , the 2012 Youth Olympic Games and won the Junior Grand Prix Final in the 2014/15 season . He was in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, Japanese master as well as 2017 and 2018 runners-up. In 2019 he won gold at the Four Continents Championships .

Career

2011/12 season: Medalist at the Youth Olympic Games

Shōma Uno won silver at the Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck in singles and gold with the team. At the Junior World Championships in the same year, he finished tenth.

2012/13 season: Silver medal at the JGP in Chemnitz

He finished sixth at the Junior Grand Prix (JGP) in Slovenia. At the JGP in Germany he won the silver medal with a personal best in both programs and a total of 188.48 points. At the Junior World Championships he was seventh.

2013/14 season: First senior title

Shoma Uno won the bronze medal in Latvia in its third JGP season and finished fourth in Estonia . He finished fifth at the Junior World Championships and won his first international senior competition with the Gardena Spring Trophy in Italy .

2014/15 season: Winner in the JGP final and junior world champion

The season began for Shōma Uno by winning his second senior competition at the Asian Trophy. He then took part in the JGP competitions of Japan and Croatia . He finished second in Japan and first in Croatia with a new personal best. This enabled him to qualify for his first JGP final. At the end of November 2014, Uno won his first junior title at the Japanese Junior Championships. The following month he won gold in the Barcelona JGP final . At the Japanese championships at the end of the year he was second behind Yuzuru Hanyu . A few weeks later, he was fifth in the four continents championships . He then became Junior World Champion in the Estonian capital Tallinn .

2015/16 season: third in the GP final

In mid-September he finished fifth in the US Classic. After the short program, he was only ninth there, but he was able to win the free program that followed. Shōma Uno was part of the Japanese team for the Japan Open competition. There he managed to beat several world champions such as Javier Fernandez , Brian Joubert and Patrick Chan . Thanks to his performance, Japan won the gold medal in the end. In his first senior Grand Prix competition, Skate America , he finished second behind Max Aaron . In doing so, he set a new personal best.

After the short program, he was clearly ahead in the Trophée Eric Bompard . But on the same evening the terrorist attacks occurred in Paris and therefore the Grand Prix competition was canceled for security reasons before the start of the freestyle. Ten days later, the International Skating Union announced that in this case the best of the short program would also be the winners of the entire tournament. Thus, Shōma Uno not only received the gold medal retrospectively, but was also able to qualify early for the Grand Prix final . There he finished third behind Yuzuru Hanyū and Javier Fernandez. On December 26th, like last year, he won the silver medal at the Japanese Championships. There he was also able to increase his best performance in the short program to almost 100 points.

As in the previous year, Shōma Uno missed a medal at the Four Continents Championships, although he had finished second with his short program. After a disappointing performance in the freestyle, he finished fourth overall.

The world championships in Boston ended with another setback for Uno. Although he took a respectable fourth place in the short program, mistakes in the free program meant that he finally fell back to seventh place. His rival of the same age, Jin Boyang , won bronze. World champion was again Javier Fernandez before Yuzuru Hanyū.

At the Team Challenge Cup at the end of April 2016, he was the first runner to do a four-fold flip in an international competition. In the short program he was the third runner in the world to break the 100 point mark (105.74), which the ISU unfortunately does not recognize as a personal best.

2016/17 season: Silver at the World Championships

The season began with winning the Lombardia Trophy in September 2016, where Uno took first place in the compulsory program and second in the freestyle. Silver went to Jason Brown and bronze to Max Aaron. Three weeks later he won gold at the Japan Open. His excellent form continued with a win at the Grand Prix competition Skate America. There he was first in the compulsory program as well as in the freestyle ahead of the two Americans Jason Brown and Adam Rippon . At the Cup of Russia in Moscow , Uno won silver and was only beaten by two-time world champion Javier Fernandez.

In the final of the Grand Prix Series he was fourth after the short program and second in his freestyle, so that with his overall result he was able to defend third place from the previous year. The winner was again his compatriot Yuzuru Hanyū, the silver medal went to Nathan Chen , who became American champion a month later. With the departure of the Olympic champion Hanyū due to illness shortly before the start of the Japanese championships, the way was now free for Uno's first national title. After the short program, however, he was only second behind Takahito Mura , and a first place in the freestyle helped him win the championship in the end. Keiji Tanaka came in second . Shortly afterwards, the association announced that Uno, Hanyu and Tanaka would represent their country at both the Four Continents Championships and the World Cup.

The second part of the season took him to South Korea , where the Four Continents Championships were held. There, Uno was one of the few to exceed the 100 point mark with its short program. With his 100.28 points, he initially ranked second, behind Nathan Chen and ahead of Yuzuru Hanyu. In the end, he won the bronze medal. The disappointment was limited, however, as Uno was able to win his first medal at the four continents championships, because he was fourth last year and fifth in 2015. Just a week later he won gold at the Winter Asian Games in Sapporo . Despite a few mistakes, he was able to prevail over Jin Boyang and Han Yan . In preparation for the World Cup, he also took part in the Coupe de Printemps in Kockelscheuer , Luxembourg , where he won ahead of second-placed Takahito Mura.

The World Cup in Helsinki ended very successfully for the UN. He managed to achieve two new personal bests there (104.86 for the short program and 214.45 for the freestyle). After the short program he was second behind Javier Fernandez and ahead of Patrick Chan . After all, he only had to admit defeat to the new world champion Yuzuru Hanyū, who after an impressive freestyle was only 2.28 points ahead of Uno. As in the previous year, the bronze medalist was the Chinese Jin Boyang.

At the last competition of the season, the World Team Trophy in Tokyo , he and his teammates won a gold medal for Japan. His overall result (302.02) was the highest of all individual runners and 18 points higher than that of Yuzuru Hanyū, who had still disappointed with his short program but was the best in the freestyle.

Season 2017/18: Olympic silver in Pyeongchang

Uno started his season with a gold medal at the Challenger Series competition Lombardia Trophy in Bergamo , where he was able to achieve new personal bests in all segments. At the Japan Open things didn't go so well for him personally, but he still won a silver medal together with his teammates.

Uno won the gold medal at Skate Canada and was first in both segments, so he had a very good start to this year's Grand Prix season. After returning from the competition on October 31st, Uno had a high temperature of 39 degrees and was diagnosed with flu. In his subsequent competition, the Trophée Eric Bompard, he took second place in the short program and first in the freestyle. He finished second behind Javier Fernández. With the two results in Canada and France, he qualified for his third Grand Prix final in a row. The final held in his hometown of Nagoya ended Uno with a silver medal, with his overall result only 0.5 points lower than that of Nathan Chen.

At the Japanese Figure Skating Championships just before the end of the year in Tokyo, Uno was able to defend his national title after winning both segments of the competition. As in the previous year, Keiji Tanaka came in second. On December 24, 2017, the Japanese Figure Skating Federation announced that Uno would represent Japan at the Four Continents Championships in Taipei , the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and the World Figure Skating Championships in Milan .

At the end of January, Uno went to Taipei to take part in the four continents championships. Due to the lack of runners like Yuzuru Hanyū , Nathan Chen , Adam Rippon , Vincent Zhou and Patrick Chan , he was a top favorite to win the gold medal. Uno was first after the short program, but was only 0.32 points ahead of Jin Boyang. The freestyle went less well for him, so that in the end he finished second behind his long-time rival from China, just under three points behind.

In February Uno won silver at the Winter Olympics, 1.66 points ahead of the bronze medalist Javier Fernández. As was the case four years ago, Yuzuru Hanyū was again Olympic champion. In the team competition he had put his team in the lead after the short program, but in the end it was only fifth for Japan.

In his last competition, the 2018 World Figure Skating Championships in Milan , Uno scored 94.26 points in the short program and 179.51 in the free skating. He had not been able to do well in the short program due to problems with his new skates. There were several mistakes in his freestyle, but towards the end of the program Uno was able to fight back. With a total of 273.77 points, he only had to admit defeat to Nathan Chen as the silver medalist.

2018/19 season: Winning the four continents championships

Uno started the season with another win at the Lombardia Trophy. At the Japan Open team competition, he won the gold medal as a member of the Japanese team, with his freestyle being the best of the men. In October he won the GP competition Skate Canada and in November he was able to finish his second GP appearance this season, the NHK Trophy, also with a gold medal. He qualified for the Grand Prix Final. In Vancouver , Canada , he finished second behind Nathan Chen, 5.99 points behind - bronze went to Korean Cha Jun-hwan . Uno's compatriot Yuzuru Hanyu was able to qualify for the GP final, but as in the previous year he had to cancel due to an injury.

At the end of the year, Uno successfully defended his national title at the Japanese Figure Skating Championships and won by almost 50 points. Second was his great idol Daisuke Takahashi , who had a comeback this season. Although he sprained his right ankle during the competition, Uno was able to celebrate his third national title in a row. He was then appointed to the team by the association to represent Japan at the following four continents championships and world championships .

At the four continents championships in Anaheim , Uno was only fourth after the short program. However, his freestyle was the best and so he finally won the tournament. The other medals went to Jin Boyang and Vincent Zhou. Nathan Chen and Yuzuru Hanyū had decided not to participate. With this victory, Uno was able to win a major international competition for the first time. He had previously won silver at least once from all of them, but never gold. With 197.36 points, he set a world record for the freestyle. Uno said afterwards: "I think I was able to do everything I can, but I think I have to do a lot more to be competitive at the top. Instead of just holding back, I believed in what I had to, and went on. When I finally broke down, I barely felt any happy feelings - it was more like, “I really did it.” I was thinking about my injury after the national championship and how I can get to the next level . "

At the World Championships in Saitama , Uno only finished sixth after the short program. His freestyle was fourth best and in the end he was fourth in the overall ranking. Third-placed Vincent Zhou was about eight points ahead. Gold went to Nathan Chen, and Yuzuru Hanyū came in second. After the competition, Uno was disappointed with its performance and even questioned its competitiveness.

2019/20 season: Training in Switzerland with Stéphane Lambiel

In the summer, Uno announced on its website that he would be leaving his previous coaches Machiko Yamada and Mihoko Higuchi. They had coached him since he was five. He also announced that he did not yet know which coach he would like to switch to. Shortly afterwards he visited the summer camp of Eteri Tutberidze . Uno described this training as "tough" but also as a "good experience". Also, Uno announced that he would not have a head coach in the near future, while Takeshi Honda would act as his jump coach. In September the UN also visited Stéphane Lambiel's training facility in Switzerland, where his compatriot Koshiro Shimada has been staying for some time .

Uno did not start the 19/20 season with the Lombardia Trophy as usual, but in Espoo , with the Finlandia Trophy . He placed with his short program in second place, just behind Sōta Yamamoto , his compatriot and former companion from junior times. In the end, however, he won the gold medal with an overall result of 255.23 points, which was disappointing for him.

At the beginning of November the disappointment was all the greater when after the short program at his first Grand Prix appearance in Grenoble he was only fourth with 79.05 points. It was led by Nathan Chen in front of Alexander Samarin and Kévin Aymoz . The freestyle failed him even more and so he finished the Internationaux de France with an unusually weak 215.84 points, trailing in eighth place.

However, after the competition, UN said that he was positive despite this situation and thanked the spectators for their encouragement and support. He spent the weeks between the Internationaux de France and his next assignment at the Rostelecom Cup in Stéphane Lambiel's training center. In Russia he was fourth in the short program, where he fell in an under-twisted quad flip. He found the result a "relief". After the freestyle, he remained in fourth place overall, 0.63 points behind the bronze medalist Makar Ignatov . Uno later said it was "not a good result" but felt he could do a quad flip towards the end of the season. He announced that he would train again in Champéry , Switzerland , before the Japanese championships .

Shortly before the Japanese championships in 2019, Uno confirmed that Lambiel was now officially his new coach. In the short program, he finished second behind Yuzuru Hanyu, who competed in his first Japanese championships since the 2016-17 season. Uno then won the freestyle and also the gold medal in the overall standings with 290.57 points. It was his first single win against Hanyu in his career.

He then decided not to take part in the four continents championships. Instead, he started at the Challenge Cup in the Netherlands in February , where, as expected, he won the gold medal and achieved 290.41 total points. The subsequent World Cup in Montreal was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the season ended early.
