history
The origin of today's place was a monastery, which was founded in the middle of the 7th century by St. Eligius , Bishop of Noyon . The place developed outside of the protective walls that surrounded the monastery area. At the beginning of the 8th century the place and its monastery were invaded by the Saracens . After the battle of Tours and Poitiers, these raids did not take place. Instead, the Normans came in the 9th century and rowed their ships up the rivers to plunder cities and monasteries. Place and abbey suffered again in the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and in the time of the Huguenot Wars (1562-1598).

Others
- The multi-wing monastery complex dates back to the 18th century and is now used as a retirement home.
- The medieval bridge over the Briance ( pont vieux ) from the 13th century was intended as a direct route for the pilgrims to St. James. The pillars on the upstream side are sharpened so that tree trunks etc. can be better diverted during floods; the downstream side is flat. The bridge has been registered as a monument historique since 1969 .
- Another 13th century medieval bridge over the Briance ( pont rompu ) partially collapsed during a flood in 1993, but has since been restored. The bridge has been classified as a monument historique since 1990 .
