The Order of St. George (also: Order of St. George - a European order of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen ) is a so-called "dynastic order of knights" of the Habsburg-Lothringen family, organized according to Austrian association law , which is in the tradition of the former imperial house of the Holy Roman Empire , Austria , Hungary and numerous other former crown lands.
The association with around 600 members is European and non-partisan, supports the multinational old Austrian state idea, the increased need for cooperation with the states of Central and Southeastern Europe, is committed to a united, self-confident Europe and has commanderies in Austria, Italy, Croatia and Slovenia , Germany, Czech Republic, Serbia, Hungary and Great Britain.
history
The Order of St. George of the Habsburg-Lothringen family, founded under the association law of the Republic of Austria , carries on its tradition on an "Order of the Old Nobility" allegedly founded by Henry VII in 1308 , the "Order of the Dragon " founded by Sigismund in 1408 and the 1469 Emperor Friedrich III. "In honor of God, the Holy Virgin, the Catholic Faith and the House of Austria " founded St. George's order .
On January 18, 2008, Otto Habsburg-Lothringen , his son Karl Habsburg-Lothringen and Vincenz Liechtenstein (†) played a key role in creating the Order of St. George in the form of an association. Subsequently, the order received a new constitution on April 24, 2010 by Otto Habsburg.
At the so-called Order Convention on April 30, 2011 in the Münster zu Neuberg an der Mürz , after the death of Otto Habsburg, after the proclamation by Grand Master Karl, the "Order of St. George - a European order of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen" as the "Order of the Erzhaus “confirmed.
Patron saint
The patron saint of the order is St. George as a symbol of chivalry.
Goals and cooperation
The St. George Order is committed to a united Christian Europe and traditional conservative values.
The medal has the following attributes:
- European
- Christian
- value conservative
- charitable
- elitist (admission takes place only after a checked proposal of an order member)
The requirement is also a friendly cooperation between the knights and ladies, especially with the Sovereign Order of Malta , the Knights of St. John , the Teutonic Order , the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and the Order of the Golden Fleece .
Charitable activity
According to its own statement, the Order of St. George is a charitable order which endeavors to alleviate or combat the "eightfold misery" in the world:
- Sickness and abandonment
- Homelessness and hunger
- Lovelessness and guilt
- Indifference and disbelief
Connection with the House of Habsburg and other associations
The Order of St. George and the House of Habsburg and Habsburg-Lothringen have a parallel long history steeped in tradition.
The historian Bernardo Giustiniani listed the Order of St. George in his work, "Historie Cronologiche dell 'Origine degl' Ordini Militari e di tutte le Religioni Cavalleresche", published in Venice in 1692 (de: Chronological Histories of the Military Orders as well as of all Spiritual Knight Brotherhoods ) Rudolf I , the first Habsburg to sit on the Roman-German royal throne, is said to have established a knighthood of St. George as early as 1273, the year he was elected Roman-German king. The St. George Order is also connected to the in 1409 in Ödenburg by Emperor Friedrich III. founded "Austrian Dragon Society", which in turn was directly connected to the Dragon Order of the Hungarian King and Emperor Sigismund .
Little is available about the further development of the apparently widely dispersed order; neither a document is known about the dissolution of the order nor about a later re-establishment or re-establishment. The "Ritter-Orden-Almanach" published in Vienna in 1779 lists the medal among the list of the repealed knight orders in Germany.
Roman von Procházka mentions in the “Austrian Order Handbook” (1974, 1979) a “Millstatt Monastery Order of St. George in Carinthia” and describes this as a sovereign knightly order with its seat in Rome and the Italian name “Sovrano Militare Ospitaliero Ordine di San Giorgio in Carinzia” “, But does not give a founding date for this community. According to Procházka, this is a “re-establishment of the knightly brotherhood of the same name, following on from the Austrian knightly order of St. George [...], which continues under the patronage of the Sovereigns of the House of Habsburg existed and was pardoned by Maria Theresa in 1756 with special statutes. ”According to Procházka, this community was“ in exile in Bavaria from the French rule in Illyria until 1838 ”, whereupon“ the priory in Austria in Austria was in exile. ahre] [was] confirmed in 1849 by Emperor Franz Joseph and then in 1917 by Emperor Karl I , who also appointed the Austrian Bishop Hudal in Rome as governor of the order. ”There are no documents about the new foundation mentioned by Procházka, including the confirmation by Maria Theresa in 1756 and Kaiser Franz Joseph 1849 cannot be proven. The confirmation of the order by Charles I is different, which was only given orally due to circumstances, but is proven by several witnesses.
After the death of Charles I, the dynastic succession passed on to his son Otto the protectorate or the grand mastery over various orders .
His eldest son, Karl Habsburg-Lothringen, is currently the head of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen.
Members (selection)
“The order is not limited to Austria, but has an extensive international network with a focus on the former Habsburg countries . 'Commanderies', i.e. branches, also exist in Slovenia , Croatia , Hungary , Italy and Great Britain . And there are also a number of prominent members internationally. "( Die Presse , September 2016)
