He convinced with an average of 1.82 and moved to the next higher class to the Petrolia Jets in 2005 , before he was committed during the season by the London Knights from the high-class Ontario Hockey League and played twelve games for them during the season.

In the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , the Columbus Blue Jackets selected him in the third round at position 69, but stayed with the London Knights for the time being, where he was the new goalkeeper. Mason completed 62 season games and was able to win 45 with the Knights, which he set a new league record. He was then named the OHL's best goalkeeper at the end of the season . In the fall of 2007 he competed with a Canadian U20 selection against a Russian national team of the same age group in the Super Series 2007 , which Canada won with seven wins in a draw.

In the 2007/08 season Mason was able to convince again with his performances in the goal of the London Knights and was appointed to the Canadian national team for the U20 World Cup 2008 , which took place across the year in December 2007 and January 2008. Together with Jonathan Bernier , he initially formed an equal goalkeeper team before he took over the post as regular goalkeeper in the course of the tournament. Shortly before the semifinals, it was announced that the London Knights had transferred him to the Kitchener Rangers within the OHL , but unimpressed Mason led the Canadian national team to the world championship title and was himself named the most valuable player and best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Shortly after his return from the World Cup, Mason was appointed to the NHL squad of the Columbus Blue Jackets for the first time on January 7, 2008 , as goalkeeper Pascal Leclaire was out due to an illness. Mason was a day later at the game against the St. Louis Blues as back-up of Fredrik Norrena on the bench of the Blue Jackets and was then sent back to the OHL. There he dominated the action with the Rangers and they finished first in the league at the end of the regular season. As one of the main favorites, the team went into the playoffs and lived up to this role, but Mason injured himself in a second round game against the Sarnia Sting and fell out for the rest of the playoffs. The Rangers, meanwhile, reached the final against the Belleville Bulls without Mason , where they won the J. Ross Robertson Cup .

In autumn 2008, Mason made his professional debut with the Syracuse Crunch , the AHL - farm team of the Blue Jackets. In early November he was appointed to the NHL squad, where he also made his debut and was able to win his first three games. Mason continued to convince with good performances, led the league for a long time with the best goals against and ousted Pascal Leclaire as the goalkeeper. Even after Mason was diagnosed with glandular fever , people continued to rely on him. With ten shutouts , he was more often than any other goalkeeper in the season without conceding and was the main support of the team when they qualified for the playoffs for the first time in their history.

He was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers at the trade deadline on April 3, 2013 . There Mason was the first goalkeeper for the following four seasons before his expiring contract was not extended in the summer of 2017. On July 1, he joined the Winnipeg Jets as a free agent , which hired him for two years. In the Jets, Mason filled the post of substitute behind Connor Hellebuyck and only played 13 games this season. At the end of June 2018, he was finally handed over to the Canadiens de Montréal together with Joel Armia as well as a seven-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2019 and a four-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2020 , who in return sent Simon Bourque to Winnipeg. The Canadiens put Mason on the waiver immediately and in accordance with the regulations in order to be able to pay him the last year of his contract.
