The 1989 World Tour Reputation Stadium Tour Lover Fest

Taylor Swift's Reputation Stadium Tour was the fifth concert tour and the first pure stadium tour by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift .

It served as a support for her sixth studio album " Reputation " (2017). The tour began in Glendale on May 8, 2018 and ended in Tokyo on November 21, 2018 . There were a total of 53 concert appearances. 2,888,892 people attended the concerts. The tour grossed $ 345.7 million in revenue, making it Swift's most successful tour to date, the third highest-grossing female tour of all time, and the highest-grossing concert tour in the United States and North America history.

The tour garnered widespread approval in reviews, generally calling it the best tour of 2018 and Swift's best tour. It also won many awards in the "Tour of the Year" category. The concert appearance on October 6th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington , Texas was taped and released as a concert film on Netflix on December 31, 2018 .

Emergence

In August 2017, Billboard announced that Swift was using a Ticketmaster program called Ticketmaster's Verified Fan to prevent robots and black marketeers from buying their tour tickets. The program, dubbed "Taylor Swift Tix", made it possible for fans to buy tickets before the public sale started by doing a variety of activities (such as buying the album ...) to increase their chances of getting a pre-sale code.

On November 13, 2017, Swift's management and Ticketmaster announced the first concerts of the tour. Tickets were available for purchase on December 13, 2017, on Swift's 28th birthday.

In late November, Swift announced concerts in Manchester, Dublin and London. Due to great demand, additional concerts have been announced in all three cities. The singer also announced additional concerts for the North American cities of Pasadena, Chicago, East Rutherford, Foxborough, Toronto and Atlanta, as there was already high demand there before the advance booking. On December 3rd, Swift announced five concerts in Oceania. In January 2018, due to popular demand, she added additional concerts in Santa Clara, Landover, Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Arlington, as well as a third concert in East Rutherford and Foxborough, for a total of 40 shows in North America.

On March 1, 2018, Swift announced Camila Cabello and Charli XCX to support the Reputation Stadium Tour. It was speculated beforehand whether Cabello will be in the supporting act, as their "Never Be The Same" tour did not coincide with Swift's tour dates. Portland's radio station Live 95.5 already announced Cabello in a competition for concert tickets as a preliminary program for the Reputation Stadium Tour on June 22, 2018 at Wembley Stadium in a post on Twitter, which was then deleted; the day before Swift announced their opening act.

On May 7, 2018, one day before the tour kicked off in Glendale , Arizona , Swift invited 2,000 foster and adopted children to a private dress rehearsal.

On May 8, 2018, she announced two shows in Tokyo, where Charli XCX would appear in the opening act. In September 2018 Broods was announced as the opening act in Oceania.

Critical receptions

Swift on the Reputation Stadium Tour at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

The tour received euphoric reviews and was often called the best tour in Swift's career and best tour of 2018. The tour received praise for Swift's stage presence and interaction with the audience, the diverse setlist and the transition between songs, the high quality of the production, the performances with acoustic guitar and piano, and the selection of costumes. Many reviews went on the gothic appearance and costumes, as well as the theatrical nature of the show, as seen on Broadway, for example .

Stereogum's Chris DeVille wrote that the tour was designed to be "the greatest spectacle in all of summer entertainment." He also stated that the tour can best be understood as “an oversized, high-tech Broadway production with a mostly gigantic soundtrack” and ended his evaluation with the following statement: “When talking about the greatest artists of their [Swifts] generation , it definitely belongs on the shortlist ”. In addition, Swift rose to "the same exclusive level as the classic rock gods, who performed before her at the venue the Horseshoe , and maintained the way of ruling the stadium throughout their career." Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield called the tour Swift's "most amazing tour yet" and praised it for creating "the atmosphere of a mass gathering." He highlighted the acoustic guitar performances that featured Swift's fans' favorite songs and described them as "a powerhouse performance that made the various Taylors sound like they were part of the story that is being told". The opening song " ... Ready for It ?" Was highly praised by Bob Gorden of The Guardian for being "a suitable and engaging opening song". He also wrote that Swift made "an impressive performance" with no "rise or fall"; "It just comes out from behind a curtain that was lit with blinding lights, which creates a 'Here I am' moment like the one Freddie Mercury would have performed."

The Independent's Roisin O'Connor , who rated the tour with 5 stars, praised the setlist, which "flows seamlessly from one song to another". He also compared the tour to a Broadway show, as "the stage is illuminated with red light and the dancers swing on the trapeze with all the glamor of a Broadway show". Lydia Burgham from The Spinoff described the concert in Auckland as a "theatrical mega-production [...]". In terms of the setlist, she thought Swift was someone who "made the audience yearn for more with every new beginning of a song thanks to the great transitions." Burgham highlighted the "familiarity" of Swift's acoustic guitar and piano performances, which proved that Swift remained "firmly in her singer-songwriter roots." She concluded by saying that "there may not be an artist in this life who can do it as well as Taylor Swift at captivating thousands of people on a rainy night - and that is her reputation that people will remember" .

Variety's Chris Willman wrote that the show “had a lot of intensity, especially at the beginning of the show. But the Taylor who 'died' also came through ... the harmless Swift we remember [...] ”. He found that Swift used the two hours on stage to "paint a rewarding, holistic picture." He said that, despite the large production, "we [...] experience the lovable, intimate presence of the most open-minded pop superstar". He also highlighted the acoustic version of “Dancing With Our Hands Tied”, which proves that “ Reputation ” also “works quite well acoustically, without Max Martin tinkering with the songs”. Randy Lewis of the Los Angeles Times liked that Swift brought "a masterclass in the creative use of technology that allows her to create and develop exceptionally powerful connections with huge audiences." He mentioned the use of flashing armbands that enabled viewers to "feel like contributors, even employees, not just passive observers." He praised the stage, which "resembled a skyscraper that is still under construction, as six crane-like scaffolding towered up behind a wedge-shaped screen". Lewis summarized the show as "most of the time tightly structured, with lavish productions projected onto the screen, spectacular lighting and pyrotechnics, choreographies and precisely coordinated interactions between star, band, singers and dancers".

When Greg Krelenstein reviewed the tour for V Magazine , he wrote that Swift has "a rare talent" at "turning a stadium spectacle into an intimate setting". He also noted that the new personality Swift picked up on her album Reputation was "an excellent fit for the size show that makes it legendary." He praised Swift for the "large selection of her many songs" and her performances on stage, "regardless of whether she plays the guitar or leads a troupe of dancers". This shows that "their [Swifts] musical and performing improvement is a complete success." Krelenstein summed up that Swift “manages by all means to fascinate and fixate the audience in order to reinvent the modern stadium tour”. Ed Masley of The Arizona Republic wrote that "there were many moments during Swift's concert when it felt like she was playing for the back of the stadium by letting the fans join in." He also highlighted the production of the tour and Swift's connection with the audience. Jim Harrington of The Mercury News praised the singer's improved vocals and increased stage presence over the years. Chris Tuite of CBS San Francisco wrote, "The only things that stand out more than the singer herself during her ongoing costume changes that are a spectacle are the huge, vicious-looking snakes that appear symbolic throughout the performance." Michael Tritsch of 303 Magazine stated that the tour "broke new ground and has set the bar very high for future stadium tours." He added, "This show's reputation has made its way into the history books."

Commercial win

Ticket sales

Four days after ticket sales began on the Verified Fan platform and three days after ticket sales to the general public began on December 13, the 33 tour dates in North America raised $ 180 million. Pollstar announced information from the Gridiron Stadium Network, an association of NFL entities that work together to book concerts in their buildings, showing that at least 35,000 tickets for 10 stadiums have been sold as of December 18. The number of tickets sold ranged from 35,419 ( Heinz Field , Pittsburgh ) to a high of 48,039 ( Lincoln Financial Field , Philadelphia ). After more than 47,000 tickets for the tour's concert on May 12, 2018 at Levis`s Stadium in Santa Clara were sold, which almost achieved a turnover of $ 9 million, opened up the possibility of an additional concert.

According to StubHub, the tour was the UK's top-selling woman tour in 2018.

revenue

The tour's first seven shows grossed $ 54 million with 390,000 tickets sold, bringing Swift to the top of Billboards Hot Tours list in June 2018. Her sold-out concerts in Glendale and Santa Clara (two consecutive concerts) to 59,157 and 107,550 viewers, respectively, grossed $ 7.21 million and $ 14 million, while the Pasadena shows totaled $ 16.3 million and the Seattle show over $ 8.6 Brought in millions. The Louisville and Columbus concerts generated sales of $ 11.5 million with 115,000 tickets sold. The latter city generated the greatest revenue, with an estimated 63,000 tickets and sales of $ 6.6 million. These concert successes brought the singer again on the Hot Tours chart list.

Records

Swift during an appearance at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver , Colorado . There she became the first woman to headline the stadium.

The tour broke many records for viewership and revenue. The opening show at the University of Phoenix Stadium set new event records in the revenue and attendance categories, overtaking Metallica's $ 5.2 million tour revenue by nearly $ 2 million more. With 59,157 tickets sold, it overtook the audience record set by the One Directions Where We Are tour in 2014 with 2,633 seats . With $ 14 million in revenue from 107,550 tickets sold, Swift surpassed her biggest sales and audience records set during the 1989 World Tour in 2015. With more than 118,000 fans at the Rose Bowl , the two shows grossed $ 16.2 million and set a new single headliner revenue record after beating U2's 2017 record of over $ 467,000 more. It also beat U2's records at Seattle's CenturyLink Field and Denver's Sports Authority Field at Mile High .

Swift made history by becoming the first woman to headline Dublin's Croke Park twice. At these concerts she performed in front of a total of 136,000 fans. She was also the first woman to perform on three consecutive evenings at MetLife Stadium and Gillette Stadium .

After the 29th show on the tour, which was held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, it had already generated $ 202.3 million in sales (North American continent only; including $ 191.1 million in the United States and $ 11.1 million in Canada). In doing so, Swift broke her own set record for the highest-grossing female musician tour in North America, previously held by the 1989 World Tour with fewer tour dates. Ultimately, the Reputation Stadium Tour also broke the record for the highest-grossing tour in the United States, as well as in North American history, previously held by the Rolling Stones' A Bigger Bang tour . Swift's tour grossed $ 266.1 million; the Stones tour 'only' $ 245 million. The Stones then hit their record with 70 performances in America, while Swift only needed 38 shows.

impact

The Governor of the State of Minnesota , Mark Dayton , declared 31 August 2018 "Taylor Swift Day" in the state to Swift's performances (on 31 August and 1 September) in the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis to honor. Netflix Special - Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour

"Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour" is a live concert film directed by Paul Dugdale. It was released exclusively on Netflix on December 31, 2018 . The film shows the second concert of the Reputation Stadium Tour in Arlington , which was the fifth headlining tour by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift .

Critical reception

The film received broad approval from critics after its release. The reporters praised director Paul Dugdale's camerawork, which brought out Swift's "celebrity", the emotions of the audience and the production that went into the concert.

Rolling Stones Rob Sheffield wrote that the film "perpetuates their best tour" and that the film "shows the spectacle in the stadium without diminishing any emotional familiarity [...] in their songs". Amanda Petrusich of The New Yorker described the Netflix special as "the end of an era". Billboards Denise Warner acknowledged that the film "illuminates the singer's strength, dedication and power as an artist." She also stated that the film “allows you to get a feeling for the singer more than a performer - and to experience how carefully everything was staged”. She appreciated that Swift "gave a great insight into her [Swift's] world as one of the best entertainers today." Deciders Benjamin Smith described the film as an "intimate documentation of an impersonal event". He added that Swift “will stand the test of time better than her 21st century pop queen” by saying that “Taylor Swift may be the only one who has figured out a way to make her music better transformed into something that is more than pure pop ”.

Los Angeles Times' Nadin Saad praised Swift's connection with her fans. CNET's Katie Collins wrote that the film "serves as a reminder that no matter what, Swift's fame is everlasting," and also praised the film "for a dream showcase of costumes, dances, and most importantly, Swift's own barely-contained bubbly." The joy of being on stage ”. She also praised the camera work and wrote that "the close-ups give new insights" into the show. Us Weekly's Nicholas Hautman appreciated the camera work as it showed "the hysterical crying and screaming of the fans in support of their idol." Chloe Gilke, who wrote a review for Uproxx , described the film as "a masterful documentation of a magical force at a pop concert" and as "a love letter to the audience of her shows and to her fans". She also stated that the film "honors the sacred joy of her [Swift's] appearance that evening and the people who made it possible." She praised the cinematography, which captures "the massive scale of production from every angle," and also praised the sound, which is "crystal clear and beautiful as the audience has been quieter so viewers at home can hear Swift well".

Awards

For their work on the film, Tamlyn Wright and Baz Halpin were nominated in the Variety, Reality or Event Special category of the 24th Art Directors Guild Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards.
