The highway begins at the eastern entrance of Yellowstone National Park and initially runs on a common route with US Highways 16 and 20. In Cody, the WY 120 crosses , and an alternative route to the US 14 branches off northwards. North of Burlington , the road meets the WY 30 and the WY 32 until the US Highway 310 and the WY 789 converge before Greybull . In Greybull there is a bridge over the Bighorn River and the US 14 now runs alone again in an easterly direction. In the Bighorn National Forest , the highway reunites with the alternative route. In Sheridan, US 14 meets Interstate 90 and US 87 for the first time. Behind the city, the road meets US 16 again and runs together with it to the east and later to the southeast. In Gillette, the road meets the WY 50 , the WY 51 , the WY 59 and again the I 90, on whose route the US 14 runs from now on. From Moorcroft the road runs alone again and turns to the northeast. After the WY 24 converging from the north , the course of the road turns to the southeast and after Sundance with the confluence of the WY 585 it reaches the I 90 again, on which the highway again leads to the northeast on the same route. After the confluence of the WY 111 coming from the north , the highway reaches the Wyoming-South Dakota border.

South Dakota

The road goes north and east around the Black Hills . US 85, coming from the north, flows into Spearfish and turns south again at the eastern edge of the town. There is also an alternative route from the interstate. In Whitewood the SD 34 crosses until the road reaches Sturgis with the end of the alternative route. There the SD 34 crosses again, while the SD 79 runs from here on the same route with the US 14 and the I 90 to the southeast. In Rapid City the highway meets again with US 16, which reaches its eastern end point here. The SD 79 leaves the common route here. The SD 240 coming from the south flows into Wall, in the north of the Badlands National Park . Behind the village ends the common course of I 90 and US 14, which now leaves the national park in an easterly direction. After the intersections with the SD 73 and later offset with the SD 63 , a common route section with the SD 34 begins . The highway crosses the Missouri in South Dakota's capital, Pierre. Here the SD 34 separates; the US 83 joins from the south, leads together with the US 14 in a north-easterly direction out of the city and after 30 km turns north from the common route. After the intersection with the SD 47 in Highmore and the SD 45 in Miller , the road reaches the offset intersection with US Highway 281 at Wolsey .
